Amsoil
« on: September 02, 2007, 10:03:36 PM »

I put Amsoil 20-50 motorcycle oil in all three holes at 7,500 miles.  I have put on about 3,000 miles since the change and have added about 2 quarts to the crankcase.  I had no problems with it using oil before, using Syn3.  In fact on a recent ride the guys behind me said they could smell oil burning when I accelerated.  Anyone else ever experience this problem with Amsoil?  A friend said he heard from an Amsoil rep that someone expereinced excessive oil usage with Amsoil in a pickup.

Maybe I have an engine problem and it just happened when I changed oil.  I plan to take it to the dealer and see what they think.  It's still under warranty.  It's a '06 Se Ultra.

IMO if you are useing 2 quarts in 3000 miles you need to get your motor checked out...

Everything with an internal combustion engine that I own runs AMSOIL.....even the lawnmowers.  I even use the 2 cycle mix oil for the weed wacker and the leaf blower.  Air Compressor runs AMSOIL.  Never had had an oil usage problem.

I've had Amsoil in the scoot since she came home from the dealer. Broke in the new motor with it. Now over 22,000 miles on a 124 and after the last 6000 mile trip she did not use any oil.

Same here. Changed over to Amsoil at 500 miles. Added 2nd quart just before Knoxville. Drained it all out when I got home. Shame throwing away 1 quart with only 500 miles on it. I would have changed it before going, but I just ran out of time.

Maybe its the rings. I guess it doesn't matter because I'll be getting new jugs the rest after Hot Springs. Hopefully after that the oil usage will be gone.

Chief,

Could you explain a little more on what your actual problem was?  Was it the Amsoil or your engine?  What was the cause?

Honestly, I don't know what's up. The parts are being replaced to correct the leaky head gasket, not the consumption issue. I don't think any effort will be going into determining what is going on since the parts are being replaced. So I don't think we'll ever know, unless its just really obvious when the jugs come off.

Hopefully the next set-up will have lower consumption.

Unless you got hold of the wrong viscosity, I don't see any way that the consumption problem would be caused by the brand (AMSOIL).  The stuff isn't magical compared to any other brand, no matter what they used to imply in advertisements years ago.  It isn't so thin & slippery it causes leaks, it isn't so slick that it causes rings not to seat, and it won't grow hair on your head either.  I would suggest that the consumption issues are the result of some other as yet undetermined factor, and should be diagnosed/analyzed the same as any other consumption problem.  Could be blow-by, could be a deteriorating valve stem seal, could be a damaged piston ring, etc.

Chief,

Just a thought, but if your head gasket leak was putting oil into the combustion chamber, as many have, that could explain the consumption.  Since they will have the heads off to swap out the jugs, you might want to mention the consumption issue and ask them to check the valve stem seals and also verify the oil drain holes are fully open in the heads.  Both have been issues in the past, and are real easy to check with the heads off the bike.

Jerry,

I haven't been able to get my arrms around how that would happen without having big blowby problems. On the first time around, the surfaces of the gasket were wet, but the crimp was intact, without any signs of blowby. I don't know how oil could be getting in past the crimp ring, while combustion gasses, at MUCH higher pressures, weren't getting out. I just don't know if I can buy oil getting into the chamber because of the leaking HG.  :nixweiss: Maybe I'm missing something.

My problem ended up being bad valve seals.  Replace them on both jugs.  But I'm concerned why the valve seals would go bad.  Especially when I just had the rear jug replaced about 3,000 miles ago due to a factory defect and they did the valve seals on that one at that time.  Guess I'll just have to monitor it.  Could it have nything to do with tuning?  I know I need to have my PC dyno tuned.  Running okay but not great.  Might have to also consider an extended service plan as my factory warranty is up next April.

DZ,

Mine used 6 qts in 1100 miles.  Dealer found valve stem seals stuck to valves and not remaining seated on rear head.  On the second failure, MOCO had them send the head in and sent a replacement out over night.  Don't know what the problem was, this repeat repair was the straw that broke my back.  I'm back where I belong on a 07 Road Glide.
