Ultra Classic Spotlight adjustment?
« on: September 03, 2007, 11:56:01 PM »

Owners manual doesn't have any info...How do you adjust the spotlights on an Ultra Classic?  There is a nut below it
but it has a wire going thru the middle of it so I don't want to mess around there.

The wire goes to your spot lamp.  Find something (open box wrench) and loosen the nut enought to move the lamp.  Once it's in place, tighten the nut.  Unless you cut the wire, don't worry about it.

Thanks!

What are these lights for?  Are they driving lights or fog lights?  How should I adjust them?

The 1st day of riding ended up coming home after dark and each lamp was pointing in a different direction when I turned them on.

There's an adjustment procedure in the service manual for the headlight, and it's about the same for the "passing lamps".  Basically you ensure the tire pressure is correct, find a level piece or earth with minimum lights, and mark off a horizontal spot on a wall 25ft away from about the middle of the front tire. Have someone sit on the scooter that is close to your weight if possible. Stand the scooter upright and the front wheel in alignment with the rear. Then check both high and low beams and adjust using the horiz or vertical adjustment screws on the headlight mounting ring.

There is a flare nut socket available from Snap-On (FRX181) that is designed for accessing the passing lamps adjustment/mounts, it's a bear without this type of socket, but maybe someone has found an alternate.  Same procedure as the headlight.....lamps should shine straight ahead with the main light beam. Many rider adjust them for their own personal preferences. I\if you want a copy of the few pages from the manual that covers this, PM me.

If you're interested in doing your own maintenance, or just wanting to learn what the dealer is supposed to do for the scheduled maintenance, I strongly reccomend you buy copies of the Service Manual and the SE Supplement. They're not the cheapest books you'll buy, but they will surely help you learn and understand your motorcycle.

Headlight and Spot Light adjustment:

Park bike with headlight 25 feet from a wall or other vertical surface, on level ground.
With normal load on bike (rider) and the bike sitting straight, measure straight up from ground to center of headlight/spot lights.  Transfer that measurement to the vertical surface or wall.
Turn on high beam, center of high intensity beam should be on vertical center line on wall, straight ahead of bike.
Switch to low beam, top of beam should touch vertical center line on wall.
Cover headlight, turn on spots.
Adjust each spot straight ahead with the top of the beam touching the vertical center line on the wall (same as low beam).

Some folks prefer to "spread" the spots by aiming each one slightly outward from straight ahead.

See CVOJOE's post for the socket for the spot lights.  It's a 9/16" socket with a slot cut out for the wire (similar to a brake flare nut socket).

Jerry

BTW - the secret to adjusting the spots without getting ticked off is to just slightly loosen the nut, just enough to allow you to move the light by tapping with the heel of your hand.  If you loosen it too much, trying to hold it in position while tightening the nut can lead to foul language, thrown tools, etc.

Get the flare nut socket before you start, it makes things so easy or take it to the shop and have them do it.

I would set the spot lights to your own preference >> just want to make sure they don't blind oncoming traffic at night.

And, I strongly suggest that you get the flare-nut socket.  Makes the task much easier.

Best stop a SnapOn guy and Order the flare nut socket. Saves a lot of frustration, and sometimes broken wires.  I use the spots with 50w, I want to see that deer before I eat it.

GRC,
The diagram in the 07 Touring manaual page 8-37 shows a different pictorial of the Auxilliary light adjustment relative to the hi beam which I thought is very confusing.  I like your diagram, but it seems that HD thinks the Auxilliary lights are set below and right.  I was confusded by the description.

Yup, you caught me.  The diagram and description are my own, not the "what do you see out there in the weeds, Ethel" Harley version.  H-D has the spots angled further down and to the right, which is fine if you want to spot critters in the ditches.  I choose to align them as per my diagram, similar to fog lights.  As long as you keep them aimed slightly down, they don't seem to bother oncoming drivers but they do improve near range illumination of the actual road surface.  With the low beam headlight and spots on, my version results in a wider dispersion with all three lights having the same vertical cutoff.

Jerry

I'm attaching the official H-D version for comparison.  Trust me, works great for checking out ditches and such.

More then likely it was moved because of the topic, and the question asked in the first post both have "Ultra Classic" in them.
