Discussion for 08 110in motor upgrade ideas
« on: September 18, 2007, 05:07:51 PM »

The guys at my shop telling me the Race Tuner is in so I'm looking for input based on members' experience for upgrading my HD 110 motor. I'm open to any suggestions as I am not out to reinvent the wheel. My riding style is mostly 1 up. However I try to take 3 - 5 road trips where I'm loaded for bear. Tour-pak, T-Bag. I carry my extra pair of jeans and all the stuff my lady wants as she can't carry much on her Road King Custom being a new rider. Most of my riding is in the 2600 - 3000 rpm area.  I love to ride in the mountains. Maggie Valley last year. Custer and Badlands next year. I'll average at least 10,000 miles a year. I ride until it snows and start when it melts.

I'm looking at the following upgrades:

HD Heavy Breather - I like the look but I'm concerned for when I'm stuck riding in the rain. I would think the rain sock would starve the motor for air. Any one running something similar to this? Problems? I have been told at this time the AN back plate and KN-800 will not fit with the stock air cleaner. Any one find a way around this problem? Is the KN-800 better for all weather riding than the Heavy Breather ( which has a KN filter on it )?  :confused5:

Rinehart True Duals - love the sound and am willing to loses the little a 2 to 1 system would offer.

Cams - I'm looking for something that is designed for the 110 motor. I m after low end torque to get her going. HP while important is secondary as I rarely get high enough in the r's to use em. Should I switch to gear driven or stay with the new chain system in this motor? :nixweiss:  The 255's seem weak in the bottom.

Heads - The guys at my shop are recommending T-man as they have made "good numbers with everyone they've done." Should I have the stock heads polished and ported? Use T-man heads?

Oil pump - stay stock or go with Fueling?

Throttle body - Is the stock 50mm good enough for my needs? Modifications? Replace?

Warranty - My shop will back all their work regardless of Moco position. If a major problem happens far from home, I have access to transportation anywhere in the U.S. (Brother has it covered with his business)

Build - I am leaning towards making all the above upgrades at one time then doing the Dyno. Would anyone recommend I put the A/C and pipes on with a canned map in the SERT until winter or just ride it stock until winter and do the whole build then? I'm not sure I have that kind of will power as the stock pipes drive me crazy. I miss my Rinehart rumble. ::)

I am trying to build a 110 motor that is reliable and strong. I am not looking to make a monster. My 07 Street Glide had SE A/C, Rinehart's, Race Tuner and made 94 hp / 114 tq. I was OK with that but she was weak bottom end. I would like to be in the 110 -115 hp / 120 - 125 tq area.

I've searched our site and came across a lot of info. As the 110's are still so new, I was looking to start a discussion on the latest our members know on them. One thing I immediately realized upon my reading. This can be a slippery slope. I found a post from Hoist in Nov 06 where he ask a lot of these same questions as a new member to this site. I have followed his build so I know how easy the motor monster can attack. No offense Hoist. You have one sweet scooter and one monster between your legs. Many great miles to come. :)

I am here to learn from people who love their Harley's and take care of em as much as I do. I would like to thank all in advance for sharing their knowledge and experience. I'm sure I forgot important details need to assist in giving me direction. Just ask me and I'll get right back to you. When responding, assume I have zero knowledge about motors and you are pretty much on the mark. I want to learn so I don't spend money needlessly or can't make a decision based on some knowledge. I am looking forward to this build. TIA.

Nice list. Don't do this yourself. The most important thing you said was using TMan. Contact him and have him, or another engine builder design everything! You need a package that is designed to work as one. It's all in the combination of components. You'll regret designing the engine mods yourself. Unless you're an engine designer yourself, give it to a PRO, consult with him. Let him recommend a complete package to meet your requirements. If you're not happy with what you hear, find another builder. That's my not so HO! ;) ;D

You sure on those StreetGlide numbers? Just sold mine had R/H true duals ,SE ac, Race tuner and S$S 510 cams made 95 torque and 84.5 hpon the dyno. Good luck with your build. Do consider the S$S ac over the Heavy breather it is less restrictive and looks cool too.

I'm going to offer my opinion on what I would do if I was in your shoes. I make no broad statement as to what you should do only what I would do if I had a 110.

I know a very anal guy named "Skippy" that put one of these on his 110. Yes a lot of bling but using the same tuner that tunes all my bikes he lost 6 H/P over the K&N. It's not for me!

Rinehart True Duals - love the sound and am willing to loses the little a 2 to 1 system would offer.

I like a 2 into 1 but the Rineharts are great for what your looking for!

Cams - I'm looking for something that is designed for the 110 motor. I m after low end torque to get her going. HP while important is secondary as I rarely get high enough in the r's to use em. See my post on heads.

Heads - The guys at my shop are recommending T-man as they have made "good numbers with everyone they've done." Should I have the stock heads polished and ported? Use T-man heads?

The month the 07 110's came out I saw a one at Tmans. Based on my experience there is no better quality work available (some as good but none better).
Tman offers combinations of heads, cams and throttle bodys to suit your needs. Don't buy parts from him buy a combination. He can rework your stock heads.

Oil pump - stay stock or go with Fueling?

Fueling

Throttle body - Is the stock 50mm good enough for my needs? Modifications? Replace?

AGAIN
It's not the individual parts that make the difference it's the combination.

Warranty - My shop will back all their work regardless of Moco position. If a major problem happens far from home, I have access to transportation anywhere in the U.S. (Brother has it covered with his business)

Sure wish Howie had a brother like you!

I know I don't have that kind of will power

JW, I have wasted enough money making horsepower and I don't need anymore practice. It's all about the combination. Do it right the first time and you can ride hard, fast and for many miles.
Good luck!
Sounds like you have a great dealer. Take care of them and they will take care of you!
That's my advice and I'm sticking to it!

There is a lot of free advice on the internet.
Some of it is no more than book reading bullchit or what they heard from the neighbor that heard from etc!
IMHO
When Rednectum offers free consultation I sure as chit would listen. It's not his first rodeo!
The man knows how to make horsepower that lives!

Thanks for the info. I'm rethinking the Heavy Breather idea as bling is not what I'm after. I have the KN 800 on my Fat Boy and my trade in Street Glide. I am happy with that system. If it ain't broke - don't fix it may be what I need to consider. Your right about my dealer. They are great guys that put up with a lot of ? from me. They couldn't match the trade in deal I got for the SERK However they still offered me 20% off all work just like I bought it from them. I pass four dealers to get to them but what the heck, I love to ride. Just sold me new hardbags off RK for $374.00. Getting them painted to match SERK. I agree I have to take care of them also.

Rednectum
I tried to email you but computers and I make a bad combination. I sent you a pm with my email address. I'm good at hitting the reply button if you send me a response. Looking forward to your help. 2 in 1's hmmmm....Love my RH True Duals tho. ;D

The numbers are what the dyno sheet say. I'll get with someone that knows and has a scanner and post it in future.

From the responses I have gotten from S / B, Rednectum and Hoist, I'm looking at this build as package. I'm not going to try to piece it together myself. I thank you guys for you help. Anyone with additional ideas or experience they would like to share, bring it on. It what you don't know that gets you.

Let's hear what you come up with. It'll be interesting to see what another engine builder, besides Wes Brown, comes up with for 110" mods! Good luck BD!

Check out latus-harley-davidson.com.  They have a huge website, and there's a dyno chart section.  They do some cam compares in there on a '07 cvo ultra.  Interesting stuff!

Check out the Tman packages that Latus has done in the dyno section.

T-man does some very nice work. If you are close enough to stop in his shop I would do so. We also do a fair amount of the CVO heads and have found some very packages that produce great power, in the rpm range that is usable.  We have found the best way is not just porting but in fact welding the head and then porting as the port is too large to produce great velocity in the low lift range on the cam. Once welded they pull extremely hard from low rpms to redline. Basic packages that will produce over 120's are the normal.

We feel that money well spent in correct head porting is by far the best money you will spend as far as performance goes.

S / B
