Not at all surprised that a dropped guide might separate or a broken guide might break in to smaller pieces and find its way to the muffler.  But you really ran for any extended amount of time without noticable oil consumption?

The photo was of somebody else's machine. As I remember it, the issue was engine noise. I recall being surprised that the engine seemed to run ok. The new valve stem seal arrangement might do a better job with oil control when the valve guide goes missing.  :)

All that slop in the hole a little noise would be expected of course.  Still can't believe it wasn't puffing smoke under a hard roll on or at initial fire up and using a good bit of oil.

the great thing about a forum like this is it makes us realize that we will never stop learning.

thanks tank and nixobilly for bringing this to our attention. both bikes 07? both guides were rear cylinder?

thanks again.

They showed me the rear head before they sent it back to the Moco -- no exhaust guide and lotsa carbon on the head.

It was the SAME bike - total replaces of head gaskets o-rings etc,  5-25-07 @ 12.5k and at 8-15-07 @22k miles.

No noticeable smoke -  nobody riding behind me at Nelson mentioned it nor did I see any during normal bike warmup every morning during the trip.  Only thing was oil leakage from rear head (but more volume).

I stopped at HD dealership in Eugene, Or and the lead wrench told me to just keep adding oil until I got back home...

Guess I got lucky....

Earlier machinery had a valve stem seal that fit over the top of the valve guide. When valve guides came loose with this setup, oil would run freely and unobstructed into the port. The new stem seal is an assembly which also makes up the lower valve spring collar. This unit will remain in place even when the valve guide does not.

The valve stem seal’s ability to control oil will be compromised because of the added valve stem deflection as well as oil seeping past the lower collar, but it apparently still does a pretty good job.

That is almost painfully interesting Mark (and DJ).  As many heads as I've cut over the years and hours spent with sore feet standing behind old Sunnen machines I'd never have expected that an install with no remaining guide would be basically non-noticable.  Just thinking about it running the way still brings on a mild pucker.  Learned something about the new seals, that's for sure.  Now I'm curious how long the seal would survive?

I agree, the expected outcome looks more like this attachment than the previous one. If I didn’t see it for myself, I would have a difficult time visualizing how on Earth the machine kept running without bending, ingesting or otherwise breaking the pieces involved with this failure; which explains my desire to photo-document the event.

When I took my 07 CUSE2 in for the SECOND round of the leaking head gaskets (after Nelson trip), the mechanic found the ENTIRE exhaust guide was missing in the rear head (not found in exhaust pipe either).   Replaced head and valves (including guides of course).

Gotta love it....

Mark

And of course, the last straw that got me the new motor in my '07 Jester was the rear head dropping a valve guide.

One thing that amazes me - the ordinary '07 heads have a retaining ring that prevents the guide from dropping, but the SE heads have no such ring....  :nixweiss:
