ordered quick disconnect for Lowers
« on: September 28, 2007, 06:15:53 PM »

Can't stop spending Money. Fist it was the new Corbin seat, Ordered, next it was the IDS Pulley, Ordered, now its its quick disconnect kit for my lowers and the new bag to hold my lowers. I know what is next. A set of the new Mich. Commander Tires before next summers trips. I do not have a Excel spread sheet, I know it is out of hand. Its water under the bridge as they say.

Saw those disconnects for the lowers when they were first released.  First thought was "why do I want to make them easy to steal?".

The theft problem is growing. I plan on putting a cover on my bike at runs, leaving the lowers off during the summer, but if it still happens, I guess I give up. They told me at the shop that someone stole a couples hard bags, two bikes, both bikes had the bags locked during a stop at a run, they wanted the bags and everything in them. Putting the Corbin seat on makes it easy for them to steal my seat too. no more seat strap to slow them down. I think the best answer is to cover the bike, use a lock on the cover, then if they go thru that, use my insurance. It's too bad you spend your life being able to pay for a few nice things, then you need to worry that someone is going to steal them from you.

Scott, it's annoying as hell that things are bothered much more than they used to be.  I'm old enough to remember when people really didn't mess with bikes.  Now they're all too often just targets in a target rich environment.

I very consciously choose to just not worry about it.  I do those things that are smart and easy to not make mine the easiest possible target.  Actually lock the bike on stops when I'll be away from it for any length of time.  Use the alarm too.  Getting in the habit of a disc lock.  But I'm not going to let the malignant efforts of some jackass ruin my days.

Actually had a complete chopped tour pak stolen off the bike of my current bike a couple years or so ago.  Screw it.  Replace it, thank the insurance company, and keep right on enjoying the bike.

I agree with Twolanerider, enjoy the scoot and don't worry about the losses. I do what I can, park in well lit places & cover the bike on all trips (out of site and out of mind); however, I refuse to let them bas**rds ruin my ride. Besides, that is what you have insurance for.

Let us know how the QD lower hardware works.  I'm interested in getting a set for next summer.  My biggest fear about thieves:  stealing my temp probe dipstick..........so I keep the stock one in a saddlebag just in case.  Other than that, I don't worry too much.  I lock the bike, use a disk lock, set the alarm and tote a nice little surprise for a would be thief.  Lifetime events have made me a light sleeper, and when staying at hotels, I do my best to park the bike within eye/earshot of my room.

I will let you know how the hardware works by the end of the month. I am just not going to worry about the problems. I also like the idea that I can remove them for cleaning and waxing, now and then.

I don't have all the add-ons on a spread sheet either.....I don't think I want to know how much more $$ I have spent (and I really don't want the wifey to know!! :o).

Well I finally did it. I had my dealer install the Quick disconnect package to my lowers. I know it was lazy of me to not do it myself. I was having the IDS put on and had them do it all at once. There is more to it then I thought. I was charged 1 hour labor. Don't know if that was right, but I paid it. I have attached photos. I am less concerned about theft. The system is designed more for removing your lowers in the summer and leaving them off, putting them back on in the winter, at least that is how it was explained to me by the tech. The "Quick Disconnect" Screws require a large blade screw driver, they are not finger tight, the only one exposed is the bottom one, the top two require pulling the glove box liner out to access. You also have to remove a lower bracket once you remove the "Lower".

I included photos of the Harley lower storage system. It seems to me to be real good quality. the bottom is strong for storage, the inside is very soft so your lowers won't get a mark. I think it is a good buy. My plan is to remove the lowers in the summer and put them on in the winter.

When all is said and done, I am not sure you really same much time with the "quick disconnect Package" but I put it on anyway. As I mentioned, I do think the storage bag is well worth it.

I hope my photos all post OK

Sorry for the lack of photos, I could only post one photo at a time so this is the first photo showing the "quick disconnect" screw at the base of the lower
