Arkansas Ride Photos (I also ran into Bubba)
« on: October 20, 2007, 09:48:49 PM »

Me and a few buds make a weekend ride through Oklahoma and Arkansas from Texas.  I got to tell you, I am truly impressed with the roads in Arkansas :2vrolijk_21:  Here is the route we covered...

...Met in Denton and started east on Hwy 380 then north on Hwy 377 into Oklahoma where the road turns into Hwy 99. Continue north to where Hwy 99 meets Hwy 70. Turn east onto Hwy 70 to meet and turn north onto Hwy 271 (just west of Hugo, OK.), north on Hwy 271 to Talihina, OK then east on OK 1, The Talimena Highway, to Arkansas where the number changes to Ar 88 into Mena. In Mena turn left on Hwy 71 to join Hwy 270. Take Hwy 270 east to Hot Springs.

Leave Hot Springs north on AR 7 to Lufton, Ar. then north on AR 123, the really good one, to AR 74. West on AR 74 to AR 21. North on AR 21 to join Hwy 62 into Eureka Springs.

Leave Eureka Springs west on Hwy 62 to Rogers, Ar. (don't forget  the Loop 187 around Beaver Lake then the small jog north in Gateway, Ar. to the Missouri line). In Rogers leave west on AR 12 to join AR 23 then south on AR 23 back down to join Hwy 71 back into Mena.

Leave Mena on AR 88 back across the mountain to join Hwy 259 southbound to Broken Bow, OK. Leave Broken Bow on Hwy 70 south to Idabel then OK 37 south into Texas.

I had a total 1,198 miles ..

THE ROAD YOU MUST RIDE IS AR 123....One of THE most challenging roads I have ever been on.  A guy at a scenic overlook told us about it so we took him up on it.  Not real long, but some of the best twists and turns I have ever seen.!!!

In OK, the Talimena Highway is also a great ride.  Arkansas 7 is also a fantastic road to travel.

Here are a few pics from the ride and our run it with Bubba at a gas station somewhere in AR  (sorry Bubba, I was in the back and not paying attention to what city we were in!!)

Me and Bubba..

OK Route 1

Beverage Stop

Another rest stop with the bikes

I'll try to find some pics of Longshots Bar in Hot Springs  ( one of the posse left his rental bike overnight ;D  He had to be a BSR to pick it up in the a.m. - another story)

A great hotel for Bikers only in Eureka Springs, AR...Riders Rest.  HIGHLY recommended.  Each room is named after an actor who was in a bike movie.  I was in the Clark Gable room ???  Didn't know he was a biker...

Great bar in Eureka Springs where we caught the end of the Cowboys-Patriots game.  I guess we could have missed it :'(

Breakfast in Eureka Springs

Great shot just outside of Mena, AR.  Low level clouds underneath a great sunrise.

Almost home

That's it for now. I'll try to post some of the other fun stuff a little later.  All in all, a great time with some very good friends.

I believe the reason the pics aren't showing is because they are in a private library that require a login to view. When I try to view the pictures directly in my browser I get asked for a password....

I went back and fixed the problem.  Sorry.  Should be good to go.  Just have to find the "Longshots bar photos".  Had to put them in a special place.

BTW, one of my buds had to rent a "Gold Wing" for the trip.  We gave him so much chit the whole trip.  He has a 2005 Road King back in Chicago, but he and another dude flew into Dallas due to time contraints.  He LOVES the CVO bikes, and I think he is now looking to grab a 2008 SE Ultra.  Should be ok to get one up in Chicago sometime this winter.

Also, the heated grips and seat are great.  I'm getting to be a P**** when it comes to being cold.  They sure help keep me toasty!!!

I'll post a map shot of AR 123.  Anyone who rides AR 7 needs to take a detour and ride this nice little twisty road.

That is one of my favorite routes we go up Hwy 7 to the Arkansas Grand Canyon then turn right on Hwy 374 which takes you down the side of the mountain just a awesome view and to Hwy 123 which is Arkansas version of the Dragon which run back into Hwy 7.

John it was a pleasure meeting you in OZARK, Ar.  ;D Glad you and your buddies had a great time....

If you ever get back up this way look me up and we'll do some riding.

Here is a link to the section of AR 123 that we rode. If you are ever doing Rte. 7, its worth the jog up 123.  We only rode the section that is east of 7,  but it is a very challenging road.  You'll leave some chrome from your floorboards on the pavement.

As they say in AR "Crooked and Steep", yes, the road signs actually say that along alot of the roads there.  On RTE 7, it actually said "Crooked and Steep Next 63 Miles".    Music to your ears when you are touring. :bananarock:
