Ride Report of 08 SERK - For those still waiting...
« on: October 22, 2007, 09:02:35 AM »

For those of you who are still waiting for what seems like forever for your 08 SERKs, I thought you might be interested in a ride report. I've put 800 miles on mine in one week, and I just completed a 300 mile ride yesterday in some of the worst wind gusts I've ridden in. Wind strengths were 25 - 35 mph, but the gusts were well over 50 mph, and the turbulence was incredible (the trip was from Las Vegas - Laughlin - Oatman AZ - Kingman AZ - Needles CA - Las Vegas).

First up, the riding position. I have a neck injury from 20 years ago and I generally can't stay seated on a bike for more than about 45 mins before serious aching pain sets in. Well, with the rider's backrest installed and properly adjusted, I'm pleased to report that I get numb butt before any neck pain. Those custom handlebars that reach right out to you seem unusually low at first, but after a couple of hours of riding, they feel like they're in a natural and comfortable position. Some bikes are best going slow and others are better going fast, either becuase the windblast forces you back or relieves the weight on your wrists, but even with the standard "bug deflector", the SERK is comfortable slow or fast. Just settle into the saddle, and enjoy the ride. Accelerating, that backrest gives you a nice solid feeling, and at speed, with the extra force of the wind, it relieves a lot of strain on your arms, shoulders and neck. The floorboards give you enough freedom of movement to adjust your leg position, and the "moustache" engine bars with their foot supports, allow you to rest your feet by the heels, or even hoist your feet straight out so they're settled on your ankles. On those long stretches of blacktop, it's nice to to be able to move your legs.

Next up, performance. From the rider's perspective, there's always enough power and the torque feels very strong. A couple of overtaking passes on the I-40 (75 mph limit) had me start my acceleration at 85 mph and end up at 105 or so, with plenty more to come. Just roll on the throttle and those 110 cubes get the job done. At town speeds, it just feels effortless. My wife says this is the smoothest Harley I've owned, saying that even the clutch work is totally smooth and free from jerks (except for the jerk holding the handlebars  ;D). She said that the acceleration is smooth and doesn't ever feel harsh or strained. I agree - the hydraulic clutch is definitely the smoothest on any bike I've owned. And that engine just feels powerful and effortless (that word again). I also own a BMW K1200S which has 167 hp and will easily do 160 mph, so I've got a decent basis of comparison. The SERK is certainly no slouch. My buddy, who has an 07 Street Glide with a 103 ci hopped-up motor (dyno tuned to produce 90 hp) commented yesterday, "Man, when you took off on the off-ramp, no-one was gonna catch you!" One of the other guys, who rode a BMW yesterday, commented that he was giving it all he had to keep up.

In those highly turbulent winds, especially on the mountain pass coming up to Laughlin, the bike felt very stable and sure-footed. It certainly tracks way better than my 05 Ultra ever did, and is far more impervious to turbulence, wind blasts and cross winds. Yesterday I rode with the Road King low profile windshield (2" lower than a standard RK shield and it allows you to look over the windshield) and I was very glad I wore my full face helmet. The standard wind deflector works fine with a full face, but is very turbulent with a half hemet and sun glasses. It's mostly the wind noise that affects you. One of the others in our group rode an FJR1300A, one of the most stable bikes I've ridden, and he was battling the winds as much as everyone. No, this SE Road King tracks like a cruise missile and is stready as an arrow.

When we stopped in Oatman for lunch, the bike drew a crowd. One guy, who knew his Harleys but wasn't familiar with this model, spoke to me for about 10 mins about the chrome forks, "custom" paint, 110 inch motor and ABS brakes. He was very envious and didn't mind admitting it. Even old ladies came up and commented. I've owned 9 bikes, of which three were Harleys, and I've never got this much attention. And it's good attention, where people admire the bike for what it is. Be prepared for a lot of roadside conversations.

The standard pipes are very quiet. They have a reasonable growl when accelerating - certaily not a bark - and they thrum reassuringly at cruising speeds, but for some people (including me), they aren't "characterful" enough i.e. they're too quiet! I like to really hear the change of exhaust note when changing speed and adjusting the throttle. These pipes are so quiet, you don't really detect that unless you give it a handful of gas. I've got mine booked in for some Rinehart TDs next week. For those of you who appreciate a quiet pipe but with a little bit of attitide, the standard pipes will work fine.

Aside from the performance and comfort, the other aspect that jumps right out at you is the braking. I am pleased to report that the new Brembo brakes with ABS now brake the way a $30K bike should. Love or hate 'em, Beemers have always had fantastic brakes, and they've saved me more than once. While nothing beats the character, soul and looks of a Harley IMHO, the braking has always left a lot to be desired. Even on my last Road King, a panic braking situation at highway speeds left two long straight skid marks on the road. This new SERK stops much faster, the brakes have a lot more bite and feel, and the ABS doesn't feel intrusive when it kicks in. Again, my BMW riding friend commented on how well the brakes work when I had to brake suddenly for a unobservant driver changing lanes.

I'm impressed by the smoothness of the 110 ci motor. I thought it would be lumpier than my twin cam 88 in the Ultra, but if anything, it seems smoother. Whether taking off or cruising, it has a nice smooth lope to it that is very comfortable - just enough vibes to know you're riding a Harley (and to keep the missus happy  ;)).

Finally, the handling. Between Oatman and the I-40 at Kingman is about 15 miles of twists and switchbacks. My Beemer buddy led the way - he used to race motorcycles and he's an excellent rider. He outpaced me but I was far from disgraced: the big Harley seems to know where to put its wheels. By the the end of the twisties, my buddy was probably no more than 300 yards ahead of me and we were about TWO MILES ahead of the FJR pilot. With the reduced ground clearance, it will touch down early, and I have a nicely grounded down right floorboard to prove it. But it's not scary - it's just letting you know to hang a bit more weight inboard if you wanna keep up the pace. Again those brakes are smooth and powerful, and now the rear brake has enough power for some useful trail braking when leading into a corner. Don't get me wrong - the SERK is no crotch rocket, but it will give a lot of other riders a big surprise when they see the elephant tap dance!

Ok, so is there anything I don't like? Yes, the bug deflector for one. It looks good and works ok with a full face helmet, but forget it when using an open face. The saddle bags are on the small side and aren't lockable, so you don't want to leave your cell phone or wallet in there. Also, the seat looks better than it feels, and is a bit of a joke for the passenger - as is the passenger backrest. That small backrest looks cool, but my wife says it digs into the small of her back and is uncomfortable.

So it's not the perfect bike. BUT... spend a thousand bucks on a Road King windshield, Street Glide passenger backrest and Sundowner seat, and it quickly converts into a very useful two-up touring bike. And if you like your Harley to sound like a Harley, factor in another couple of grand for pipes, hi flow A/C and dyno tuning... and get the double benefit of more power and cooler running. And for me, rather than have one of those big King Tour-Paks, I'll take one of the HD fitted touring bags. Just pull it off the bike when you get to your hotel and you're done.

To sum up, this is a well built, high quality Harley that's powerful, smooth and comfortable, it handles and stops well, and it copes with high winds and highway turbulence. And it looks great, judging by all the favorable comments and looks I've got. But best of all, it's one helluva lot of fun!  :2vrolijk_21:

Great First Impressions report Quint! I see you're hooked now on the ride of the best CVO HD ever made IMO! Yeah, it needs a litlle help. Most things will be to make it perfect for you. But hopefully, you won't be forced to do things because of HD's problems, like some of us have had to. After owning 4 before this SERK since '95, that didn't deter me from making this bike perfect for me, in spite of it's engine issues. I love RK's. And the SERK3/4 are the best riding bikes HD ever made!

I wish you nothing but trouble-free riding with your new SERK. Keep on enjoying it! :2vrolijk_21:

I have to agree with most of what Quint said, although I am not as totally pleased as he is . I have 400 miles on my 08 SERK now ,over three weeks with 75% being in relative stop and go on two-lane country roads. I have found that there seems too be a slight lag in the fly by wire throttle system. It seems like a start under load (two-up or on a hill) needs a little advance throttle too keep from bogging down. no biggie just something to get used too. Yes it could be my riding skills but this is about my 11'th bike and forth H.D.
The seat is not comfortable at all to me. I'm 6'3" with 35" inseam and in order to get halfway comfy had too remove the driver backrest bracket from the fender to keep it from digging into my arse after about 25 minutes. It is also "rather loose" as in the material isn't tight and firm not much advanced foam in that thing more like wall-mart foam. The engine guard footrest for me is strictly for looks. Even with legs stretched out on top of bar just hits my calves in the wrong spot.
Lastly the suspension is a joke just like the rest of the touring line. Brake dive is excessive. suspension float is ridiculous. can't wait to get it to Traxxion to make it right.

Don't get me wrong this is the best H.D. I've owned it has a couple of minor issues to be addressed in the comfort and handling departments but that is minor and was expected. Maybe shorter riders don't have some of the comfort issues or as many problems with the susp.(due to rider weight) but if your over 6' tall I would expect that you too will be addressing some things.

As for the rest I agree overall it's a great ride and Since I knew what I was getting into I couldn't be happier. :bananarock:

Initially I also complained about the seat but either my butt is getting broken in or the seat is getting broken in.

Maybe it is a combination of both. I do like the looks of the stock seat. I'm six feet and I can't use the backrest or the windshield at all. I think the bike looks better without them anyway.

I've also experienced the engine lugging starting off in first and I suspect it is from the engine tuning where when the engine gets warm it pulls a cylinder out momentarily. It seems to only happen when in stop and go traffic at lights when the engine might be warming up a bit. I'm just more prepared for it now and just roll on the throttle a bit more.

I'm going to experiment a little when it happens again and try bumping the throttle before engaging the foward gear and see if I can clear the condition before it rolls on.

I am also very pleased with this ride and agree with Quint and I am glad to hear it can hold its own with the BMW's because I've only ridden two road bikes and they're both Harleys that I own.

Even though I want to get hard bags custom painted like other people have done, I do think the stocks bags look the best with the Black and Silver like I have.

Hey Quint...

Are you sure that the saddle bags are NOT Lockable ??

Pretty sure. They have a concealed release button behind the saddle bag, which connects to the latch through a convoluted cable, much like a clutch cable. The fact that the release button is concealed provides some security.

Nope... just checked the manual. Definitely not lockable. Just one of the many little compromises on a SERK. But what the hell - if I wanted practical, I'd get another Ultra!  :laugh4:

H.D. has a lock kit available for the SERK saddlebags. It can be keyed to your locks. I think it's about $69. Mine are on order. I'll post a thread when they come in and are installed. I'm sure the install will be a P.I.T.A.

Excellent report quint! Just clicked over 4200 on this silver/black '08 and agree, this is probably way more bike than I expected and gets better with the miles - we're very pleased with it. As was mentioned; the seat or my rear have become more forgiving of a long ride and also this throttle lag seems to be quite common. The local dealer says that he will reduce the throttle lag at the 5K service - we'll see.... I have seen nothing to be alarmed about as far as oil leaks - except where a mechanic dumped the oil filter while removing it on an oil change and I see that that is very easy to do and is almost unavoidable.

Go ahead and get the standard RK windshield from HD and you will increase your enjoyment 100% with the bike. It's under $300.00. And something else: the leather covered bag lids are easily damaged when the bags are replaced on the bike. The upper shock mount nut with it's sharp corners will cut the leather since the lid will open too far. Vinyl covers for those nuts is a must.

And these radials sure do howl!

Great 1st impression report. I put the Road King® Detachable King-Size Windshield - Mid-Low Profile for my scoot. The wind deflector does look good but.... Now that I'm riding home in mid 30's to lower 40's degree temps, I'm glad I made the change.

Make the changes you like to make her your own....she is one sweet ride. Best always.
