Ezo,
Other than the whine caused when in 5th gear, I've had no issues with my tranny, whatsoever.

Some people complain of a 5th gear whine as it is a straight cut gear.  Some have tried the IDS pulley kit for the rear drive pulley and have said it makes the noise less apparent (std on the 08's).

I don't hear much noise out of the gearbox.  The IDS didn't change any noise, just smoothed out the shuddering at low rpm in higher gears.  If you still have the original lube (Syn3) try switching to Redline, Mobile 1, Amsoil or one of those.

The IDS isn't really intended to eliminate the gear whine, but the pulse damping can have a slight quieting effect.  I wouldn't buy the IDS just for the gear whine, since I believe you would be disappointed, but from everything everyone has written about the product it seems to be great for it's intended purpose, reducing the "herky-jerkies" at low speeds.

BTW -  the whine from the straight cut gears is nothing new, if you listen closely to the 5 speed boxes you will also pick up some noise at certain speeds in certain gears (4th in mine, for instance).  The problem with the CruiseDrive is that they mixed helical (quiet) and spur (noisy) gears in the same box.  The difference in sound levels between the two gear types has a lot to do with making this noticeable.  If 5th and 6th were both the same type, most folks wouldn't pay much attention to the sound.  There is an aftermarket fix for those who find this highly irritating, from Baker Drivetrain.

I have 2000 on my  IDS and it did quiet the 5th gear whine a bit , but as said earlier , not a reason to go to IDS.  I don't think I noticed it on my WG3 because the pipes were so loud . The 07/08's are so much quieter stock that other noises now become more annoying.

ezo,

Check with your shop about the "Elbow Grease" promotion. It's good for $100 (I think) off towards labor on a list of items. One of the items is the IDS.

Good luck.

The "Elbow Grease" promotion is a promotion HD is running where there are several items that qualify for $100 off in labor. The IDS is one of the items. I suggest you ask your Service Manager to look into it if they don't already know about it.

Information I've found on this site quoted 1/31/2008. I hope that's right.
