Exhaust Upgrade Question
« on: October 27, 2007, 09:00:27 AM »

Had my Flaming Orange FXSTSSE2 Springer for 2 months now and am thinking about an exhaust upgrade.  I'm looking more for deep rumble than loud.  Aesthetics obviously key, too.  Lot's of stuff written everywhere about pipes but this is clearly home for an FXSTSSE2 owner.  Here's the choices:

1.  Slip-ons.  Both V&H and Rinehart make slip-ons.  The V&H is same dimension as the exhaust pipe.  Rinehart has muffler bulge like the stock, but smaller.  Rinehart end cut is blunt (with the black trim), although they make a talon tip.

2.  V&H 2:1 Big Radius.  Seen the pics on the site and elsewhere.  Dealer advises may be some loss of power, but may not be noticeable.

3.  Rinehart 2:1 exhaust.  No radius, straight out.  Dealer advises higher performance and great sound.

4.  Do nothing.  Stay with the stock pipes.

I like the look of the stock pipes because they show off all the engine.  Both the BR 2:1 and the Rineharts cover the drive train.    HD stock pipe designed to show it all off.  Slip-ons would preserve the look.  BR 2:1 is a great look, though as are the Rineharts.

So my question, all in, what's the view of the group on which way you'd proceed, considering performance, sound and aesthetics?

Thanks.

I added my V&H Big Radius and SERT about a month ago, love the sound, noticable increase in performance.

Put Rinehart 2into1 on my 07 with a race tuner. Great sound and looks (IMO). Smoother response thru out. Of coarse I'm a Rinehart lover. Have them on all my rides. On my Duece they sound much better and not as loud as V&H, plus had a much better bottom end! Just my 2 cents worth.

First welcome RPR50 from up near Cleveland actually Broadview Hts great site with loads of info. I went with the Rinehart mainly because I liked the sound low deep rumble and because of the added performance you get with a 2 into 1. For the tuner I went SERT just because I didnt want any hard time from the dealer if I ran into any problems. I also have more pics in the gallery section good luck in making your choice and if you can try to hear a few different set up's before you decide.

Great looking bikes.  I appreciate all the information on the site and the willingness of people to share their insights.  My bike's in for the 1,000 mile check.  I added the auxiliary headlights.

Pipes are going to take some thought.  I like all three you guys have shown.  I'm going to run the stock pipes for now and stay on the lookout for what interests me so I can hear them live.

Bags and sissy bar, I'm mulling over.  Bike looks great clean, but the right bag (like the Ironbag) could really dress it out.  W/o a sissy bar, hard to lash things down to the seat.   You could do the sissy bar, skip the bags, and use the HD travel bag that hangs on the sissy bar.

Decisions.  Patience.  Thanks again for your help.

I put RUSH slip-ons with 2.25 baffles on my bike. sounds great-gives it that true"harley" sound. i also put a powercommander on at the same time. I am thinking that if i decide to do a full exhaust, i might go with the samson street sweepers. But i really like the look of the stock exhaust and that is why i went eith the Rush slip-ons. Plus i got them for $192 off ebay shipped.

I also liked the look of the stock pipes. So i made a set of d-rings for the stock pipes. The bike sounds like a pro stock and along with the sert if I didn't get 10 hp gain it would be a miracle. I also have an 06 nighttrain that I started off with the rhinehart staggered shots, lost power then switched to hooker dark side trouble makers and gained all lost power along with 3 hp gain. They also have the d-rings in them that I make. I will be dyno tuning my springer hopefully by May if the weather turns nice.

I also put the rush slip-ons with 2.25" baffles on my springer.
they look almost like the stock mufflers but sound very deep and loud like I wanted.

got them from fuelmoto for $240.00 shipped.
