Newbie needs advice
« on: November 06, 2007, 01:17:54 PM »

Hey,
I have been reading with interest this forum for the last couple of weeks.
I am trying to decide on whether to pull the trigger on a 2007 FXDSE Dyna. It is new at the dealer and looks really nice. I have gotten them to discount approx. 10% off of the MSRP. I am concerned about 2 things:
1. Is the 110 motor reliable? In other words are there only a few vocal people with problems?
2. Is this a chick bike? I am 6' 4" and 270. I see that some of the ladies seem to have this bike.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

First off welcome to the site.  10% off sounds good.  As for the problems I've had a few but would do it again.  Since the motor replacement things seem ok other than some lifter niose.

Welcome from Arkansas!

IMO, don't think any model HD is necessarily a "chick bike".

Welcome from Oklahoma  :cowboy:

Nope....not a chick bike.  If you are getting 10% off msrp on a new SE bike & you like the dyna, you better grab it quick.

Welcome to the site.  I'd buy the FXDSE in a heart beat if I were to get a second Harley.  Personnaly I'm a dresser guy, as I found out when I bought my first "Geezer Glide".  I had a 1200 sporty that I was going to keep for life.  Sold it a year and half ago to get a newer dresser which I sold this year for my CVO dresser.  No regrets even with the 110 motor issues. I haven't had any yet but I'll take the chance as the CVO bikes are just a dream to drive.  I love my wife's Dyna Street Bob and can only imagine how much fun the SE Dyna would be.  And my wife rides a Dyna. And when mine's in for service and she's not using it I'm on it like white on rice.  IMHO the Dyna is much more fun then a softail.

Good Luck whatever you decide.

Welcome from Salem, Oregon. First, the FXDSE is a great looking bike! My concern for you would be "does the bike fit you well"? I have a Dyna Low Rider that I set up originally for my wife, meaning that I lowered it and left the mid controls in place in addition to lots of chrome goodies. I am 5'10 and feel somewhat cramped on this bike even with my feet on the highway pegs. I can't imagine that you would feel comfortable for too long riding a Dyna. The plus side - the Dyna bikes are really a blast to ride so if it is a fun ride you are looking for the FXDSE is sure to satisfy.

Thanks for all of your input.
great site, great people.
1 other thing: the "standard" warranty is 2 years for the CVO. Is it the same for all of the HD's? How much do the extended (5 year?) warranties cost?

24 months/unlimited mileage is the warranty for all H-D's. Extended warranty's are negotiable even though dealers will tell you they are not. You can shop around to different dealers (there are some listed on this site that give 20% off) and get a deal. You don't have to buy the extended warranty from the same dealer you buy the bike from, and it will be honored at all H-D dealers.

Fired00d- Thanks for the info.
SCRM-R Good point!
Guilty- 1 of the bikes that i rented during this quest for the perfect bike was a Dyna wide glide. I really liked the forward controls and this bike is similar. I think my height works for forward controls.
One of the other bikes that I like is the fat bob, again forward controls. I havent ridden one of those yet.
Rented a Fat boy and wasnt impressed.
Rented a Heritage- my second favorite. It didnt have highway pegs and wasnt very comfortable.
rented an Ultra Classic- Too much for cutting traffic.
I am leaning towards the edgy look realizing that i will be giving up comfort.

My buddy, Cheevers, is 6' 4" and bought a Dyna and the bike was too cramped for him.  He added foot peg extensions and all of the other obvious stuff to help him stretch out, but ultimately sold it for a different model.  Be sure you can live with the dimensions for long hours in the saddle...unless that isn't the goal.
