I am really sorry to hear what happened to your bike...and thank you for posting the info.
I had just ordered a Corbin solo and was going to take the plastic off when I got the seat.

Don't do what I did!
« Reply #1 on: March 15, 2005, 01:24:07 AM »

I've always liked the solo seat look so I peeled that piece of clear plastic off the rear fender that ostensibly acts as a protector against the seat rubbing the fender.  It looked crappy with the rack.  The fender looks even worse now because the clear plastic protector lifted some paint off the fender when I pulled it off.  I was shocked; then pissed.  It didn't take a lot of the paint but enough in three different spots so that it's noticeable.

Dealer said that Harley won't warranty it because I wasn't supposed to remove the plastic.  I looked in vain for a do not remove sign and couldn't find one.  It appears to me that the protector was put on before the paint had an oppurtunity to cure.  The dealer suggested I contact the customer service folks.  I did and they say they're sticking with the dealer, but that I could appeal.  I asked how to do that and they said through the dealer. The dealer says they've never appealed a warranty decision so I suggested that they should try and figure it out because I think the paint was defective.

Should I just eat this and pay for new paint?  It seems a few owners here had some paint problems but they were mostly confined to the '04's.  I suspect the dealer will eventually offer me a tube of tough up paint but I want a new fender or to have it repainted.  Any thoughts?

Oooohhh DDL, I am so very very sorry. I know how you feel.  If the advice you just got is a simple as it might me to get fixed, please follow it. It is so much easier than the other route of fighting and having so much negative energy in your life.
As for taking the clear plastic piece off, I also have a solo seat and it did not even occur to me to have that taken off (now I see yours and I am now thinking that a good idea!) but rather have been trying to find a tan ostrich, to match my seat, fender bib.  Your seat is black, Mustang makes a black fender bib, you could just cover it up and hide the problem.  (http://www.mustangseats.com/faq/faq.htm#9c)

However saying all that, I really like the look you have achieved with that gorgeous Candy Cherry peeking through that chrome luggage rack.  All that I am saying I am sorry you have this problem and it is upsetting you. Whatever solution you decide on, I wish you a speedy recovery and many, many miles of great riding on a most wonderful bike.

I would also have to side with the dealer in this case, it is not the dealers(or Harley's) fault that you peeled that sheet off incorrectly.

For anyone else thinking of doing this, they come off just fine if you heat it thoroughly with a heat gun before peeling it off.

Two words for sticker removal:  hair dryer.

OK, two more words:  stealers suck

DDL, sorry 'bout your luck, bro.   You should be congratulated for your honesty.   I am sure I would run some lame "Wow, I looked back here and the paint is falling off" line by em, followed by my best Gomer "Gaw-llie".  Wouldn't have worked either.

Having that area of the fender blown in by a good painter should not cost much at all.  Had to do that with my last bike....all will be well.  The area you now see so well is likely not noticed by others and you may even decide a little touch-up will suffice.

BTW, very nice look with the fender rack and solo seat....is that a HD rack?

I have, at one point or another, removed "that" on each and every one of my bikes.  NEVER has any paint come off.  Although I don't think you'll win that battle with the stealer... I think maybe it was applied before the paint was fully dry.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
