Considering an SERG
« on: November 17, 2007, 10:09:12 PM »

I'm considering selling my '01 Ultra, putting the money toward my business, and picking up a SE RoadGlide to replace it later next year.
I saw that one for sale in Tampa, and it really has me thinking. I have a couple of questions and concerns for the SERG owners.

The earlier touring bike swingarms are known for cracking. Have any of you experienced a cracked swing arm, or upgraded to a later swingarm?
Does the SERG come with Cruise Control?
In the event of cosmetic damage, can a competent body shop recreate the Eagle on the fairing, or is that a decal under clear that must come from HD?
I prefer a full size tourpack for touring. Has anyone installed a larger tourpack?
Other than cam tensioners, and the dreaded M&M FI, are there any other concerns to look for?
Are there any differences that would make a 2000 or a 2001 more desierable?

Thanks

Does the SERG come with Cruise Control?  Yes!

In the event of cosmetic damage, can a competent body shop recreate the Eagle on the fairing, or is that a decal under clear that must come from HD?  A good painter can copy anything. I'm not sure if the decals are available, but I would hope so.

I prefer a full size tourpack for touring. Has anyone installed a larger tourpack?  I have seen some with a King Pak.

Other than cam tensioners, and the dreaded M&M FI, are there any other concerns to look for?  That would be a good question for Otis.

Are there any differences that would make a 2000 or a 2001 more desierable?  The 00's were first but the 01's have the upgraded wheels and the 12 disc CD changer and the alarm system.

Thanks

Mark

Either year Mark is great!
No regrets on mine!

You can't get parts for the MM anymore from the dealer. I haven't had any problems though.  Doc

Well Otis I wish I could say I prefer the M&M too, but I can't. My experience with the M&M on my '01 has been horrible. I ended up going with the Zippers kit with Auto-Tune. If I do get an SERG, and the FI gives me trouble, I'll probably go Zippers again. I'm not sure I want the 12disc CD Changer. I have an iPod that carries all the tunes I need, and would rather have the tourpack space.

I know the SERG did not come with rear speakers, did they come with CB radios too?

Get the 00, no CD changer and the MP3 will work through the AUX setting. Nicer colors too especially the red one. I was told that if you can prove that you are the registered owner the factory will redo the paint and graphics.

Remember you can never have enough red stuff :2vrolijk_21:  Doc

For sure, B B...it's a common term here in the South for a half assed or careless job, mechanic, etc.  Been hearing that one all my life, and have used it several times in my life to describe those who don't have the skills or motivation to do a job correctly.

I've never heard of the cracking swingarm deal, either. :nixweiss:  Do you have somewhere you can point us that has some more information on that?

The design on the fairing is a decal.  That might be something worth checking into, but I doubt you could order just the decal . . . you'd probably have to order the whole outter fairing and hard telling if that is still available or not.

The MM fuel injection was a concern of mine before I got my SERG in September of this year.  But, I spoke with a few folks that had some higher-mileage MM bikes and they didn't report any problems, so that alleviated my concern.  I did have to have the cold idle adjusted on mine before I picked it up.  It wanted to idle at about 600 rpm, but everything's been fine since.  I think if you find one that hasn't been dorked with and/or have someone local that knows how to tune them, you should be fine.

There's no problem with a king tour-pak.  They mount just like the chopped ones do.  Just looks like chit, IMHO, but then folks say the same thing about the king pak on my SEEG. :nixweiss:

As far as differences between the two years, basically, it's just colors and the '01s have the Thunderstar wheels and engine-turned trim on the cam cover, air cleaner cover, and I think the tank console, as well.  The '01s are just a little "flashier," overall.

No CB's on either one and if you don't like the tour-pak mounted CD player, then you have to deal with cassettes or get a MP3 player of some kind.

These are great bikes and you can't go wrong if you get one, IMHO, whatever year you go with.  I wish I'd have gotten one a long time ago and if I had more $$$s, I'd buy another one or two.  They're that good. :2vrolijk_21:
