Shifter

We all know that one of the benefits of washing your motorcycle is it gives you an opportunity to really look for things that aren't right.  I spotted one today.  The picture below shows how the shifter should look when everything is tight.

During today's wash, I noticed that my shifter was loose as depicted in the picture below.

Tightening required moving everything into it's proper position and tightening this 3/16" hex screw.

Certainly not at all difficult, but I've illustrated it here, so that others might look for this challenge on their machines.  I have no idea how long I've been riding like this, but the thought of what might have happened is pretty scary.  Hope this helps.

Henry, even in your photos (where EVERYTHING normally shows up) you don't have a fingerprint or a smudge anywhere in your chrome.  I really hate you right now.

:)  And I'm still not done with it.  Was out looking things over before I sat down, and I've found a few areas on which I need to improve my efforts.  That bottom belt guard really pisses me off.  It's a dirt magnet.  And that friggin' swingarm.   :o  I'm gonna get a bottle brush and extend the handle just so I can get into those little spaces and inside the fenders.  I HATE dirt!!!   :2vrolijk_21:

  I hate me too!   ;D

Don't tell me about it.  I don't want to know.  I'm perfectly content in my own little psychotic, obsessive, compulsive world.   ;D

You also need to check the other end of the shift linkage on the back side of the primary as well because it will come loose on the shaft and that one is a bugger butt to change.

Henry you got the melon looking gooooood!

Yea your making me mad too, I'm in a friggin watering ban now and my SEEG is nasty! I may just take it up to the car wash and hose it off and do it there.  I just dont want to ride a wet scooter back home to dry and detail.

Whenever I travel, that's what I do, and I dry it and detail it there too.  Takes a little while, but it gets done.

The primary side came loose on mine on a trip to the grand canyon and you're right a bitch to bet too and imposable with the junk tool kit H-D sends with the bike. I was lucky to have a Victor rider with tools even tough they where metric it got me to the local napa store.

Henry, same thing happened to me a couple years ago when I was getting ready to leave on a trip and noticed excess slop in the shifter.  Glad I caught it before I left. :nervous:  And, like you, I posted some photos to help our fellow riders out.  It's not something you really think about having to check until you notice your own being loose. :idea2:  I tightened it up and it's been fine since. :nixweiss:  I check this one and the one behind the primary every oil change now. :2vrolijk_21:
