Hey twincam, Rocky and I have two Rotts' and know first hand how special they are. I was once told that there is a reason good pet owners are selected by their animals - that is to provide a good life for them. Sounds like you did just that!! Cherish the memories and we're very sorry for your loss. Both my dogs are ill and I'm terrified to think about what may be coming. We are sincerely sorry for your loss.

Howie

PS - to answer your question - I prefer the company of my dogs to most people - I guess that means animals can be better than people.

I had a neighbor who had to put his dog down and vowed never to get another.  The pain was too much.  He had another within a year.  I put my old girl down last Christmas and we got another over the summer.  The hardest thing about losing a pet the way you did was there no time to accept it.  There one minute, gone the next.  It's too much of a shock that way.  Wait a couple months, get another, all is well.

Are they better than people?  Only in that they can't talk and tell you what they are really thinking (if they can think)

twincam. My heart goes out to you... Dogs are called" Mans best friend for a reason". Having 4 Rotts and having lost 3 of them over the years I understand how great a friend they become.. The best thing I can say is grieve for awhile and when you can get another..The new pup will never take the place of Sugar, however it will help to lessen the pain of your loss.. Last July 4th week, while I was away on vacation my Sadie Girl dies of cancer. Hollie the other Rott, had a stroke the same day and the vet thought she would never be the same. To almost lose them both almost sent me over the edge... Hang in friend it will get better...

yea, we had Sugar for 4 years, we were wanting to breed her one more time because lots of folks in the area were wanting pups from her, after a few years of not being able to find a stud, we finally went and bought a male pup, he just got old enough to breed her, everything seemed to be fine, she was ok when I left for work and Gail came home early for the holiday, and she was gone. she must have had trouble delievering. she had 2 other litters with no problems. guess it was her time.

I have a friend that "rescues" Rotts but I wouldn't know how to get her to ya. Are there any harnesses available to put her on the SERK?  :nixweiss: My first Rott I got in '89, boy was I in for a treat. (he was aptly named JD  :nixweiss:) Grew up working on a farm, always had a dog and been around animals my entire life. In my opinion Rotts are one of, if not THE smartest, most loyal and intuitive canines there are.

There goes my excuse to ride AZ  :'( I know from being involved with the breed for many years that when you are feeling better there are many options available to find a good Rott. Don't be afraid to check out the local Rott rescue as they are discarded readily (at least here in the NE) and if you select carefully you will have a new best friend whose life would otherwise be in danger. I feel for ya Randy but give it time and it'll work itself out. Or at least it has for me.

Now that'd be ridin'

End at Portal, AZ US  Map

Total Est. Time: 34 hours, 13 minutes     Total Est. Distance: 2279.19 miles

Not sure I'm up for the challenge of riding the SERK out there, but sure would like to ride out there with ya. Don't have a trailer either - trailering my bike is something I would like to reserve for emergencies. Living in upstate NY I may have no choice however.
