Dyno's and Elapsed Time Runs
« on: November 26, 2007, 11:06:16 PM »

I have never really looked at elapsed time from a comparison perspective or as a tool to see how good a motors run.   Hoping some of you have some insight as we all know big numbers are great looking on paper, but they dont mean the bike gets out of its own way despite how good the numbers are, because you have no idea how long it takes to get there.

So my question really revolves around what is a good elapsed time from Wack to max torque or horsepower in a 5th gear pull on a 6 speed or a 4th gear on a 5 speed?

I have asked Cycle Rama to give me a dyno sheet with elapsed time in seconds as well as rpm.

So what elapsed time would you look for a good running street motor considering the comparison is on a dyno jet 250i dyno?

The track is going to yeild a better answer provided the bike hooks up from the launch, but we can save running at the track for another topic if you guys don't mind.

Springer, Rednectum, Dewey, HD-Dude, GMR, and anyone else?

Mikey,

What I am talking about is how long it takes to go from when the guy twists the throttle and hits the green button for the dyno software to record your data for the entire dyno run so from wack to max numbers or your rev limiter setting.   so rather than engine rpm on the bottom of your dyno sheet you have time in seconds.

Mikey if your being serious,

It is when you turn the throttle as fast as you can giving the bike gas until you can go no further then hold it there until the bike hits the rev limiter or blows up.   That is wacking the throttle or being at WOT (wide open throttle).

So your saying, when I wack the throttle and wax Tommy, is that the same thing!! :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Yep, only difference here is you don't have to wack the throttle to WOT to wax Tommy.   Throttle driving should be good enough :)

It's Simple.
Dyno 90HP 114ftlbs TRQ
Elapsed time 12.5 sec @ 105.5 MPH

Deacon nice run.   I was hoping to know your elapsed time on your dyno sheet as well as your numbers.    so instead of rpm at the bottom time goes there any chance you have this or it is available to you?

Thanks

What does wack mean??  :huh2:

 Couple things here.

 First off it's whack

 whack  =  hit

Differing levels of use depending on the situation.

Whacking the throttle is a good thing   :)

Tony Soprano sayin he's gonna whack you isn't  :(

I've always held to the 3 second rule. You should be close to max TQ and 90% HP at 3 - 3.5 seconds for a quick motor

A fast motor is one that hits high numbers but doesn't get there till 5 or 6 seconds

A quick AND fast motor hits TQ and HP as stated above and then the HP number keeps climbing with out much drop in TQ till you reach max HP

 JMO of course

FUNNY stuff

Well first off you need to compare the runs as close as you can. But we like to look at time. As what we see is that if you put a sheet in sae and set it up you will see the 5150 cross on the line etc. Time will not show that way but what you get is a rate of acceleration. Now two bikes can make the smae hp and tq ( have sheets to prove this) and one will make that same dyno pul 2.5 seconds faster. I have posted on this before. What you are seeing is VE. If you have more ve than the next engine you will be able to rev it faster. That is what we strive for a extremely fast revving engine. So thes tow bikes make it to the street one is much faster than the next.  As for time i have looked at hundres of sheets from stock to 155 fire breathing monsters.

What you will see in the performance world is that most kits. Now unbalanced you have my number feel free to call as there is no way for me to list all of this info. But take a 103 kit with 10.1 compression making in the teens for hp and tq. I have seen these kit running in the 7.5-9 second range. Now the same kit we did making a bit less hp and tq ran the same rpm range same dyno a 250I in 5.4 seconds. The bike that we tested against it made the pull in 6.9 seconds. Now they both run very good. But when you ride the 5.4 second bike you swear it was a larger engine that it was.   I will see if I can post up some of the timed runs I have.

Sure is a lot of whaking going on here... did this web site change since I was here last? You guys and your strait line stuff. Boring! 5th gear roll on on mine would be about 35 mins. give or take 5 mins...LOL!  :2vrolijk_21:
