Battery tender
« on: November 27, 2007, 09:14:14 PM »

I seem to remember reading that battery tenders/trickle chargers should not be used with the 07 SE Ultras, yet mine was delivered w/ a pigtail which I assume is for that very purpose.  Can anyone verify whether or not T/Cs can be used on these oil leaking machines??

Thanks

Dave,
I have been using one on mine for a year, no problems at all, unless it has
something to do with the head gaskets leaking...LOL, just kidding.
It will be fine for you and a good idea too!!!

I can't imagine why anyone would say you can't use a Battery Tender on any model year.  I'm afraid you've received some bad information.

My '07 SEUC is plugged in to the battery tender whenever it's in the garage.  I have been using the tender for over a year on it now and so far no adverse effects, not even head gasket leaking.  :P  I ran a battery tender on my '02 Ultra for 5 years and was still using the OEM battery and it started like the day I bought it.   Someone was blowing smoke up your backside.

There was a thread about  installing the pig tale with the new security system on the 07/08’s – when you disconnect the battery it causes the alarm to go off unless you first remove the maxi fuse, maybe this is what you are confusing with?

Thanks to this place, I'm the proud owner of two battery tenders.  I always thought that since I ride year round, I didn't need one......................and I probably don't.......................never used one before in the past thirty something years, but the master of all things moderation, Fired00d, said something very profound, well, to me it was anyway.  He's still on his first battery, and is of the mindset that he'll get another two years or better from it.  Sounds good to me, so I got one for Thumper.  Then the Sporty came along.  It already had a pigtail, so I got a BT for it as well.

Neither machine leaks oil.   ;D

And neither machine has even the slightest speck of dirt on it. Your garage reminds me of an operating room at the hospital.  ;D

He subscribes to that theory of "What can shine will shine".
Also, "It may not be the fastest but it can be the cleanest".

Maybe, "Dirt is heavy and slows you down and affects aerodynamics"
Possibly, "A clean bike is a clean bike"

How can you have a clean bike if the environment it lives in is dirty.
As Gomer would say, Shame, Shame, Shame!

Good job Henry!

Great words of wisdom there, Chip, and every word is valid, however, I'm just sick like that.  If the scoots look dirty to me, then I'm gonna clean 'em.  Got too much money, time, and effort wrapped in the acquisition process and since I've had them to just let them sit around and rot.  I changed oil in Thumper the weekend before last, and when I went to dispose of the burnt oil, the manager at O'Reilly's commented something about half the oil in his burnt oil tank is probably mine.  Two bikes, a diesel, a car, a little truck, a ZTR, pressure washer, and a push mower..............he's close to being spot on.   ;D

Sorry for the late response but my travels schedule is maddening.

My tender pigtail has a 7 amp fuse..smaller than that on my Nostalgia (15 amp).

Thanks again for the advice.

Put 45,000 miles on the 03' Ultra, never replaced the battery.  Used a battery tender if I did not think I would ride the next day.  I ride year round if the roads are OK, but still think keeping the battery tender on the bike is really good insurance, cheap to!

Ride Safe.

More than a couple of days in the garage... it goes on the tender.

Ooops... that reminds me!

Dave,

You bring up a good point - for those who might want to connect a regular charger, 10 amp or larger, through the pigtail rather than remove the seat to get to the battery terminals, don't do it.  You will quickly blow the fuse in the pigtail.  Been there, done did that.
