SERK Leather Bags / Shock Upper Nut????
« on: December 02, 2007, 01:42:47 PM »

I did a quick search for this but found nothing, maybe it was how I searched, but oh well here it goes.

On stock SERK's without TourPak when you open the lid on the bag it will over rotate and dig into the upper shock attachment nut, like this.

This is what it looks like with only riding it about six times.  I can't imagine what it will be like after you open and close the lid a few hundred times.

Here's what both of my lid edges now look like.

With the TourPak on the lid will hit the side of the TP and the lid edge will not hit the shock nut.  But what about all you guys without the TP's, what does your bag lid look like?

Thanks.

I looked at my stock bags on my 07 SERK and I cannot see any marks on my bags from hitting the upper shock-never noticed it hitting there.  I have since changed over to hard bags.

You might try adjusting the mounting brackets to reposition the bags.  I had to adjust mine when I installed the bag locks. Good luck.

You will even get an impression from the short stock passenger backrest, as it will hit when fully opened.

Dan;
I second what rotten said ---- adjust the mounting hardware. I had to do the same immediately after delivery. Only my right bag was rubbing on the filler strip that is bolted to the rear fender.
What worked best for me was to loosen ALL mounting point bolts and WHILE THE BAG IS IN PLACE grab it or bump it and move it where you need it for clearance and of course retighten.

I agree with the last two post that this may be a minor adjustment to keep the lid from rubbing, however I would bring this to the attention of your dealer just in case within your warranty this rub may go all the way thru. Bringing this to there attention and getting a copy of the work order may be the difference in getting the top replaced down the road under warranty if this damage is irreversible.

I adjusted it when I first got it, then again when I put the tour pak on.

I have a problem with mine hitting the luggage rack support and putting a small dent in the leather, but I'm switching to hard bags, so...

Okay guys, thanks for the help.

I went to my dealer over the weekend and the bike that was originally going to be mine, but was delayed, was now in on the showroom floor.  2008 SERK Annie #466.

I checked the bag lids on this one and one side hit the nut and the other side hit the passenger's backrest support.  The backrest seemed to be not centered very well.

I agree that when I have my TP on it won't be a problem, but I plan to ride some without either the TP or the passenger's backrest.  I'm going to see what type of a lid stop I can come up with that will probably just double stick tape the back side of the bag back panel just below the lid.  If positioned correctly I think the inside of the lid will bottom out on the stop and restrict the lid from going all the way back.

Thanks again and when I get the time to make the stop I'll let you all know how it works.  If it works I'll post a few pictures.

Later dudes and dudettes...

With two sided tape on the inside because the vinyl cap could be tighter to suit me.
