I promised Spyder pictures of what I did with the XM antenna.

I originally had the XM antenna inside the fairing, until I found out the antenna is the receiver, not the GPS.

I use my GPS on the bike, in my truck, boat, just about anywhere, and I wanted the XM feature available in at least my truck and the bike.

So, I have a Cyclegadets.com antenna bracket mounted to the GPS bracket. Prior to MV 08 the brackets where 25.00, now they 6.00

The "way to" long antenna wire is folded up and a piece of heat shrink tubing applied. This is then stuffed between the GPS and antenna brackets.

I know, should have used a longer piece of shrink tubing.
After shrinking the tubing (double wall stuff with the adhesive - sealer) I squeezed it in a wood vice, hence the wood grain.
Note to self, next time use two smooth pieces of plastic.

Yes, but that is a lot of wire, and it looks like chit compared to this. This is neat and is good for taking on and off. You barely notice it when it is on the bike. The wire bundled up with Velcro is not so "hidden.

Duane, I'm using the swivile mount attached to the bottom of the 478. This way it is easily removable. How is your's  mounted? ( no banana jokes)

I am using the Garmin supplied "marine mount". The difference with the marine mount is the locking button on the release tab. Aside from disconnecting the power cable, audio out and XM antenna, it pops right off. On long trips (eg MV) I had the antenna held down with one screw. It would still bounce around on the bracket occasionally without the screw.

I haven't contacted Garmin yet, but my power cord broke on the last day coming home from MV. That is the 3rd broken cord. Still have to contact them about the screen, you can see all the scratches in the above picture.

If you look at the "back side" picture (honest, I wasn't thinking of what you might think of that  )
you are looking at the accessory mount part of a Techmount  bracket.  I have an older version, but it looks almost the same.

I am using the shortest arm. This is allowing for a very "tight" install on the bars, the GPS is below the top of the fairing, and positioned just about right for my line of sight. I don't like the swivel mount, too tall, bulky looking, and looks like a BMW-GW install. And the Techmount IS show chromed 

When I changed the bars to the Wild One's I needed a new handlebar clamp - I called Techmount (after a week or 2 of un-returned emails) and the person I spoke with told me the mounts changed, new ones will not fit older arm and plate assembly. He told me he would look around for some older stock. 5 days later I had the parts I needed, no charge.

BTW, I am about ready to turn the weather subscription off. Don't need it for now, the weather will pretty much look like this all the time until March.

you got that right, porthole.  It's been way to long for me to remember that last thread.  If I'm understanding the way you've got this set-up, you remove the mount from the handlebar w/ the GPS and the antenna when you leave the bike unattended.  Where do you 'unplug' the sound and power cable.......   At the mount or at the sources?  I like the thought of the large shrink tape......I'll steal that idea if I can figure out how to get this whole set-up to look halfway decent.  Right now, I'm still at a lost on accomplishing that.  The nice chrome Techmount just doesn't want that rough looking antenna mount to rub up against it.  har!  spyder

No. The GPS snaps into the Garmin mount. The Techmount handlebar clamp, arm, Techmount "plate" and Garmin mount stay on the bike. I unplug the the power cord, and the audio cable (which is a 1/8" mini audio plug) and pop off the GPS and XM Antenna.
On long rides, where I use a screw to secure the antenna I usually leave the antenna on.

Many times though, if I am not far from the bike, I just put my helmet over the GPS, buckle it and cinch the strap up tight.

I use the GPS almost all the time, it is just fun to have on the bike. If I don't plan on using, or I just want to clean up the looks, I'll pop the arm and mount off, leaving the clamp on the bars. The clamp is not very noticeable by itself.

BTW, I used a "simple" clamp I got at the Deals Gap store and a 2nd Techmount plate on the left side for my iPod. Guess I should take a picture of that too.

On my bike, the Garmin mount is black, the GPS is black the XM antenna is half black, so the antenna bracket being black is a non issue for me.
I might even switch out to a Techmount plate and arm in black, just to keep the trend, and just leave the chrome handlebar clamp.

I bought two, about a week before we went to MV, 1 for me and 1 for Glenn (OZZy). Paid about $56 for the 2 with the shipping.

Found them a couple a weeks ago way cheaper, got 3 for $18 delivered. At least the price went down
