Odometer Readout--Stranger than Fiction
« on: January 03, 2008, 12:27:15 PM »

First and foremost, Happy New Year to All! This website and its members are invaluable!!!
So, I'm riding back from the Rose Parade (Pasadena, CA) on Tuesday with the wife on the back, and what do I notice?
The speedometer and tach are not functioning at all (and I'm riding home at 70 + mph), and the check engine light and the security system key light are lit.
Moreover, there's a readout on the odometer display, stating "Bus Er" Whoa: Crypto message.
Bike's running fine, not far from home at all, so I roll in, and shut her off. When I restart after less than ten minutes, the tach works, nothing unusual.
Long story short, she's at the dealer now, ridden there last p.m. (with no strange problems, by the way).
Has anybody had issues like this occur w/ their 06-07-08 FLHTCUSE?
I assume that "Bus Er" means that there was an "error" of sorts, likely with the Buss (fuse issues).
Oh well, quality problems abound in my life. . .
Thanks,

Don't know what your problem may be, but my guess is that the dealer is going to tell you "reported problem can not be duplicated"

Geezer,

The "BUS Er" message refers to the serial data bus.  This "bus" is a communications link between the speedometer, the TSSM (turn signal & security module), and the ECM (electronic control module).  You may have had a short duration intermittent open or short in the circuit.  The dealer should be able to retrieve stored diagnostics codes and follow the appropriate diagnostic routine to isolate the issue.  Don't let them blow you off with the "couldn't duplicate the problem" story - if this intermittent issue becomes a full time issue, your bike may not run at all (for instance, one of the symptoms of a BUS error is an engine that starts and then immediately stalls).

Second on the dealer looking at the codes - everything is stored in short term memory so see what popped and track down the wiring to that component or device as it is more than likely a connection, wiring or actual component - in that order...
