DAMN Fairing Screws...
« on: April 06, 2005, 02:16:56 PM »

OK, I have had it with those two fairing screws located between the forks.

I am looking for ideas and solutions to the problem of reinserting these fracken things.

The sweet spot is getting harder and harder to find.  They are getting worse at wanting to be cross threaded and I am worried that I will be at the point of no return soon!  I picked up some hex head screws with the same thread but at this point, the receiving threads are really getting bad.  It is getting so that I am reluctant to take off the fairing.

Can the threaded metal part connected to the fariing (that receives the screw) be replaced if it's threads are crossthreaded?  I am not home to look at this but will tonight.

clean up the threads with a tap

But in general, once fixed, the location really makes it tough to align the screw straing when rinserting.  That is why I would consider it future problem.

Also, I am ashamed to admit it, but I have never used a tap ... although this will be a good excuse to add a tap & die set to my tool box.

One of the best additions to my tools over the past few years is a good set of tap and dies.  You're probably better cleaning up the threads with a tap or thread chaser  before putting screws in again.

If the threads get too screwed up, you may be able to (or have someone) replace the threads with a helicoil insert, which tend to be much more resistant to cross threading.  I'll have to check mine to see how much material there is to the metal.  That's key.

I do agree with MFG as a first option, just use a tap to clean up the threads.

If u have to re-tap the hole dont use a tapered tap,  use a bottoming tap.  1/4-20 I beleive.  Just take ur time cw a tad then ccw a tad.  Keep doing that back and forth real slow.   Jackhd

That piece denoted as #6 in the exploded diagram is just the skirt.

Thanks!

my fat fingers just can't get that screw lined up to go straight it...that is why I want to try a hex head in a magnetic socket.  So it starts to go in, I hear a squeak, stop, back it out and start again.

To be honest, I have always had to do this...maybe the wrench at the shop was the first to screw these up!  But als, it was probably me.

Looks like part number 9 is the recipient of the screw?  I do have the manuals just no time the last few days.

Just a small tip. Whenever I take the fairing off I use a magnetic tipped extendable sylus(looks like a collapsable antenna)  that way I can place the screw on the tip of the magnet and position it properly with one hand while screwing it in with the other.

You can go to sears and pick on up...comes in handy all the time for us fat fingered types.

also get one of those small flashlights that fits on your head (headlamps) to properly illuminate the dark hole in the fork bracket so your hands are free to work..

Removing, no problem

Reinserting, problem.  It is really difficult to line the screw up straight for me anyways.

Bill,

Is it possible for you to mount an alignment bushing either to the threaded insert (preferred) or to another part of the area that the screw threads into.  Another possibility is to replace the threaded insert with a different type that would self align the screw.
