seat bracket
« on: January 12, 2008, 04:51:50 PM »

Not necessarily a CVO bike question, but.  I purchased a new seat from Harley.  It is the Orion blue flamed stiched limited one in the 07 catalog.  Looking at the bottom of the seat you cannot get access to the screws to change the bracket so you can use the cool chrome bracket with the cool allen screw.  It came with the hand turn type screw, but I am not sure I like it.  And has anybody ever heard of someone stealing a motorcycle seat?  Because this would make it real easy.  Should I attemp to cut an opening to attach the bracket I want?  Just wondering what everyonez opinion would be.

There was discussion here a few months ago about using a tamper resistaint screw. I use one in my industry, a Torx security screw. Others have found one that actually has a bit that is more secure i.e. less common.

That's a good looking seat, Soulfly.  Let us know how it rides when you get a chance to put some miles on it.  Do you know if it sits you closer/further back/lower or higher than the stock seat yet?  I've never actually know someone to have a seat stolen, but if you stop and think about it, it really is like leave a few hundred dollar bills laying there if it's outta-sight.   :-\ :'(   I actually hate theives, they make you have to carry locks, special tools, take things off at night, sleep w/ one eye open, etc, etc.  But, I'm not moving to Singapore.  ???  har!   :drink: spyder

I have left my bikes parked everywhere with no more safety than the key lock and until now (knock wood) no problem......but I am aware that my seats have not been so fancy!!

This has been a concern of mine since my latest seat purchase. I would want a secure screw and it would need to be stainless. I have used torx security screws in the past but these are becoming quite common and the bits can  be purchased at any local auto parts stores these days. What do you guys think about this.

I'm not sure how much you would save as the Ultru-Lok has a unique code for each fastener much like the McGuard lock. In my case the security of having a unique code is preferred. I'm not sure everyone is wanting to pay for this, but hey how much can it cost?

Hey Roy, if I had that seat you're getting, there's no doubt I invest whatever they cost to 'insure' it the best that I could for those times you've gotta walk away from it.  I'd also worry about some punk vandal that was jealeous and would slice it for the hell of it.  Gotta keep it 'in sight' even more so now, dude.  :beadyeyes2: :rifle: har!  :drink: spyder

Roy, if you look into these, and a group buy helps with the pricing, I'd be interested in a couple of them. Thanks. :2vrolijk_21:

The screws needed would be

¼  x 20 x 5/8 for the seeg
¼ x 20 x 1 ¼ for the sefb

I called these guys this afternoon and they told me they had both sizes and the screws would cost $5 a piece and the tool would cost $50 I was pretty excited but not sure what the screw looked like as he described where the picture was on his website and I told him I would check when I got home from work cause the page he referred to had about 12 different styles in the picture.

When getting home I was correct in that the page had a picture of about 12 different screw styles so I called back to get the correct page up and after getting better information I was able to get a better picture and it was a button head screw (like above) just like I wanted but I was told they didn't have the sizes we would want in stock (bummer), he said they mostly sell  the sheet metal screws, 5/16 and 3/8 machine screws but not many ¼ inch. It turns out they put a batch together for an order and the batch is usually about 1,000 + pieces. He said they will put together an order for stock sometimes and if they break the batch apart they will make sure they sell to different parts of the country keeping the security intact. I hope this all makes sense.

I will try out some other companies for other options as I really need to figure out some method of securing the seat on my sefb. A little disappointing but if I find out anything that will work for us I will post it here.

Thanks for researching this for us Roy. This is the info on the SERK3 screw: 2952A SCREW, 1/4-20 x 1/2 SEMS, truss hd.

So we might need to check each model before ordering them. I'm interested if you do anything with them. :2vrolijk_21:

Hoist,

I see your showing the screw as a 1/4 x 20 x 1/2. I'm thinking you have the same bolt as I not sure the part# at this point but just to clarify. After measuring my bolt I came up with 17/32 long, I may be nit picking here but I went with 5/8 cause 9/16 is not usually recognized and I always go longer, it can always be cut and maybe longer would be better.
