Any one put rear mounting hardware on their SERK
« on: January 17, 2008, 01:47:24 AM »

I have put the hardware on and mounted a rack for my t-bag. When putting on the rack at first the hoops were too wide apart so that the quick releases did not line up with the docking hardware. With some tweaking and slight bending I was able to get it close enough to make it work. However, releasing the rack from the docking hardware and putting it back on is a pain in the butt.  Researching this, I looked at a FLHR at a dealership and and the tire and fender are quite a bit narrower than the one on my 08SERK so I am thinking that this is the problem. The mounting hardware is fine, but the rack is supposed to fit on that hardware with a narrower tire and fender. Has anyone run into this problem? I do not have to deal with removing the rack because I commute on the bike and usually just leave it on. However I am considering a solo Mustang seat and would then like to remove the rack and t-bag when I am not commuting. Thanks in advance!

I originally got this hardware for my 07 SERK and found that the lids of the panniers caught on the mounting bolts when you opened them. With them being leather I knew that this would ultimately mark them and eventually make a hole so I discarded them and went back with a seperate sissy bar and rack combo that I just take off completely when I want to go back to the "clean" look.

Doesn't seem to be any issue with this luggage rack not supporting a bag either. I did a couple of thousand miles last back end with my good lady and a large Saddlemen Tour Bag strapped to the back.

Been there, done that! First try was with the wrong kit, which is 3/4 too narrow. Don t' remember the part number for the correct one, but you have to get creative with the instructions and figure out exactly where to put the various spacers, shims and washers. Took 3 separate assembly/disassembly tries to finally get it exactly right. Too bad the instruction sheet couldn't have been put together by someone who has actually seen a bike. :-\

I was afraid that Fing with it was the answer, but I am concerned that there is more than one kit - guess I should look into this... Thanks Serkcus :2vrolijk_21:

OK just looked this up with the help of some folks on another forum
FLHRSE3/4 Touring Detachable Docking Hardware Kit should be H-D p/n 53988-07 NOT H-D p/n 53804-06 (ref. page 412 of 2008 H-D Genuine Motor Accessories and Genuine Motor Parts catalog)

Of course I was sold and installed the wrong one My local parts department sucks :-[ :-[ :-[

That is the correct P/N and I had no problem with it. It's for SERK 3/4. I use a detachable 2-up luggage rack now. I ordered a KTP w/detachable 2-up TP rack for the bike as well.
