I've never hit one on a mc but have come close. I splattered more than a few in the pickup truck. I'm sure that biker had to pull over to change his underwear.

 Guess I should have checked to see if it had been posted. I had a close call with a couple of deer last fall. My husband, Al, and I took the afternoon off from work on a warm gorgeous day, knowing that it would be the last nice day before the snow fell. We rode to the Sugarloaf area and had a nice meal at a place that caters to bikers. Al insisted that I lead in case I should drop my bike, he would be able to help get it off me (he's very protective). It was dark and I didn't have my mirrors angled very good as I had his head light shining right in my eyes. I noticed a movement on the side of the road on the left and saw the deer. I instinctively moved to the right, only to see the other deer just pass in front of me! Lucky that I moved! Al didn't see either one of them.

Deer in the road is part of life here. I've hit several with the truck. I've barely missed several with the sickle. Just after JD moved up here, we were on the interstate one day and we kept passing these greasy spots in the road. I knew she didn't know what it was. She finally asked and I explained it to her. She was  :puke:. I've deer hunted most of my life and understand deer's habits. Theres certain times of the year that they're worse than others. Whenever the farmer's get in the fields to harvest crops, that seems to run them out. During the fall rut is a bad time. During cold weather they get out earlier and stay out longer to feed as they need more food to keep warm. Some roads are worse than others, just due to the geographics of the area. If I catch myself out on the bike after dark during times considered to be peak feeding times, I try and pick roads that bypass the areas noted for deer. That's not to say you wont see or hit on right in the middle of town. You can hit one anywhere, anytime. The horn is the best tool to scare them away if you have time. Another thing to remember is if you see one, there's probably five more right behind it.

That's great advice Ken, we have a pretty high deer pop here as well. Dawn, dusk, fall and fields that are being worked are always where there's the most movement. Especially the fall!! For anyone that's going to the Adirondak ride to meet up with Howie & Binx be prepared. Long Lake and surrounding area is LOADED - be careful. We don't have the number of hunters up here we used to so the population has gotten out of conrol.

I live about 5 miles south of the Illinois/Wisconsin state line.  Deer are thick around here, anytime, but far worse in the fall.  In Northern Wisconsin where the cabin is, deer are thick year round.  Up there, on a bike at dawn or dusk is a very risky venture.  Having hit one on a bike a couple years ago (in Minnesota on I 90 with my cruise control set at 80 and not wearing a helmet), it is not something I care to experience twice.  As careful as you think you are, most times it is simply fate.  They appear out of the overgrowth or fields as if from nowhere - you barely have time to see them, much less react.  Basically, it is over before you know it.  Not only have I hit one on my bike, a few years back, my best riding buddy hit one on his bike while riding about 20 yards in front of me.  I got splattered with deer remnents and he ended up with some serious surgery on his wrist to reattach ligaments and tendons as well as correcting nerve damage - and quite a bit of down time.  When I get in a situation where I am riding in an area known for deer and it is the wrong time of the day, I feel it in my gut.  The feeling is hard to describe - but it's not good.  I don't know if scared is the right word, but at minimum it is a healthy fear.

I think it's a healthy fear! I myself try to stay off the roads at dusk and dawn when I can up here because as you said most times there is nothing that can be done. You met one at 80 w/ no helmet?? That sounds painful - F-that!!

Trust me, it was... Seperated shoulder (torn ligaments), cracked sternum, broken wrist (torn ligaments - nerve damage), several fingers, thumb (more torn ligaments), bruised lungs from the impact...  I will never forget the feeling the first night - I couldn't get into bed so I slept on my back on the couch.  I woke up during the night and tried to get up.  I couldn't do it.  I couldn't pull myself up, couldn't roll over, nothing.  I have never hurt so much head to toe.  Vicodin became my friend for a week or so.  My friend who was riding behind me said I did two 360's with my SEEG before I let go of the bike - then I tumbled for almost 200 feet - fortunately in the grassy median of the highway.  My bike was toast...  I never hit my head once...unbelievable as that sounds.  I had a small cut on my cheek from my sunglasses.  But, about two weeks later, the new SEEG was delivered...  and life goes on...

Best deer story:Friend of mine hit a deer with his roadglide with his girlfriend on the back.Never went down but mangled the deer & flipped it into the windshield of his Buddy's bronco who was following Him.Couldn't figure out why his buddy was freekin' out so bad 'till he realized his friend thought it was his girlfriend that hit the windshield.Banged up the bike & bronco but no one was hurt but the deer.
