Somewhere I have a poster of the Missouri firing a 9 gun salvo, in the picture, about 1/2 mile from the ship you can see 6 projectiles on there way out to "reach and touch someone". Very cool.

I had the privilege of being a spotter for the Missouri when it was recommissioned for Viet Nam and those 16 inchers where pretty awsome. We had them firing 15 miles onto San Clemente Island  and each round sounded like a complete freight train going over your head. We called them naval rifles since they had a very flat trajectory and it took a lot of bang to make that happen. These pictures demonstrate that perfectly. Doc

Newton's (3rd I believe) law of physics. " For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction " Good job with the ballast in this case, but also sequential firing in some situations. Don't know if everybody knows this or not, but one of the earliest "mechanical" computers was installed on BB Class ships to ensure that all guns aimed in the same direction would not fire simultaneously. The Japanese did not have this nor were they very good at deep hydroponics and ballast geometry and actually had some of their destroyers roll over from firing their big guns.

If I remember correctly, six could fire almost simultaneously and the other 3 on the rebound. Would love to have seen this computer, ancient computers were pretty impressive for the size alone.

The Nips had bigger guns (18" vs.16"), but nowhere near the skill and numbers our Navy had.

Those early computers also took into account the movement of the ship no matter what the seas were like. When on board you could see the barrels moving up and down to compensate. Bearings at the time were not strong enough to enable the guns to swivel so the turrets were vibrated to make that happen. I didn't realize this until a crew member made me aware of it. When spotting it only took a couple a rounds to bracket the target and then fire for effect for as long as you wanted and hit the target while the ship was moving !!
