flares....  ( and chaff, i think) it sets off on its own  when a sensor "sees" something

When they leave for missions from TQ and Al Asad the helo ensure that the Chaff and Flares function - also the door guns.  That is pretty funny when you have someone who has not been there before and as we cross the air range the Door Gunners let loose a few rounds to ensure the .50 cals are functioning.  I have seen contractors just about hit the overhead when the guns go off thinking we are being shot at.  That and a .50 cal has a distinctive sound...as in LOUD.

Since USS COLE was attacked in Yemen, I have expended much time and effort adding these wherever they'll fit on the DDG's my company builds. I am well aware of the sound.  Interesting side note. The tech manual on them dates back to the 40's.
