The critical experience for doing this sort of thing “successfully” is a thorough understanding of the Mountain terrain. Sled handling technique and ability is important, of course, but understanding your environment is the key.

I first rode the back country with the person in the orange helmet in 1997. It was immediately apparent that he has a strong passion for back country exploration and is a highly skilled, seat of the pants navigator. When I first met him I asked him why he didn’t use a GPS and he replied, “It would ruin the experience for me.” Rich exclusively uses a Topo Map and a compass. I do not share Rich’s passion for the paper technology, so I carry a Garmin Rino 530.

Nobody was hurt; although it took a week to recover once I got home. Boy I sure got old quick; what the hell!

The moose were 30 to 40 yards away. The Elk was close enough to keep our full attention. We only stayed long enough to get a couple of photos.

I found this piece to be an inspiration this morning and thought I'd share...
Below is a link to a great piece of sound engineering work. It is a composite audio/video of song whereby additional tracks were laid in by different singers and musicians from different places around the world. The finished product is tremendous! The song itself is that classic standard "Stand By Me" originally released in 1955 by The Staple Singers and released again in 1961 by the Drifters. This composite version is a real toe tapper, so turn up the volume…
