squeaky brakes FLHRSE4
« on: February 13, 2008, 02:43:10 AM »

I've only 550 miles on my new SE RoadKing. A few things drive me nuts, however nothing like squeaky brakes. Thankfully, I don't have any engine problems as of today, or I am sure the story would be about that. However, since day one when I received my new beauty, I have had some rear brake noise that is totally obnoxious.

The local dealer mech/tech told me to drive it for a while, and see if it "remains a problem". I searched our site for any other squeaky brakes and found none.

Anybody else have excessive noise from the brake system?

I am due for a service check on this Friday. Some of the purchased and installed before release items are not up to par. The flushmount gas cap ring is loose and going to come off soon. Easy to replace, but covered. I think the prep work must be done properly for the outer ring to stay put, otherwise, its destiny will be a freeway fast lane sooner than later.

YES. Mine started last year in Sturgis. It drove me crazy driving through the canyons hearing this loud noise coming from the back of the bike. As I rode back into Dallas I dropped the bike off for servicing, told them about the noise (at that time I did not know what was causing it). They didn't hear it, so to them "it wasn't a problem". Since then I have realized that when it starts all I have to do is touch the rear brakes and it stops, so I've learned to live with it and hope it eventually stops.

I had the same thing on my RK, they looked at it twice at the dealer. Once they reshimmed one of the rotors, it stopped the squeal, but the rotor was rubbing so hard on the pads that the front breaks for hot without using them. Had them put it back, now the squeal is back. I think there's a service bulletin about swapping the rotors from one side to the other? B.S. if you ask me, I'm going to Lyndall Z pads and see what happens.

kona76  I changed to Lyndall pads  on both my bikes as the dealer  told me after 4 attempts  to repair the squeak that it is now normal  and learn to live with it as some bikes do  and some don't squeak. They did install the new pads for free on both bikes. Witch was nice of them  since I supplied the pads. . With the new pads no squeak, very Little dust and better breaking. Great product  Billy

I have a retarded education going on here. See, I thought when you pay such high dollar amounts, and extended warranty till ..2015 like I did; I wouldn't have to "get used to squeaky, noisy brakes. Cause, Brembo ABS top of the line brakes don't squeak, right? They don't on most bikes.

See, I'm from Old School, college educated way of thinking that says: If that 110" leaks oil, It's seen it's last days on my streets until a new engine is delivered. Is that wrong? Oh, hell no, no way is that wrong.

Get used to the fact that some squeak and some don't? OK. Get me a set from ones that "don't squeak" and give me that set. Win win situation.

There is a great scene from Star Wars..like the dealer is the Jedi, and the customer is Jabba going "your Jedi mind tricks will not work on me". Even though they still do in the movie...

$37,000 plus SE Road Kings don't squeak when the "Brembo" brake ABS systems are applied. Trust me, somethings wrong, obviously. Further suggestions?

Hate to tell you Mike, but that logic about top dollar begetting top quality is not applicable to Harley-Davidson.  Based on my experiences plus the shared experiences of this forum, it appears that a person will have many fewer headaches purchasing one of H-D's standard models rather than the supposed "top of the line".

I'm not familiar with the new brakes on the '08's, but I would assume they would have the same issues as any other disk brakes.  When do they make noise, running down the road with no brake application, with initial light application, anytime they're applied, ??  Is the caliper perfectly aligned with the rotor (rotor centered and running true in all planes relative to pad surfaces)?  Are the anti-rattle springs installed correctly?  Are the pads dragging due to a sticky piston?  In other words, since this isn't an issue being experienced by everyone with this model there must be something different with yours.  It will take good ol' systematic diagnosis to come to a cause and thus to a repair.  Look for an older tech/mechanic, one who has been around long enough to remember the days when we fixed chit rather than just change parts willy-nilly until we accidently fix it or the customer gives up.

Thanks all. I did order the Lyndall Z-Plus brake pads for the front. The pads are great; I have had them on my SE FatBoy for a few months now.

The dealer could not find a part number for the rear yet. I wrote Lyndall and "Paul" wrote back saying the factory part number is the same for both front and rear (#7254). He mentioned HD uses a different composition on the rear brakes, and maybe that's why HD part numbers are not matching up.

So, hopefully, I can use Lyndall Z-Plus 7254's all the way around.

I get a lout squeak in the front as I slow down, and sometimes a stereo squeal in the back that starts at higher speeds and once started will continue until I let off of the brake or come to a stop.  I sound like an 18 wheeler when I come to a stop.  My SE pipes are not loud when slowing down, so this makes up for it to ensure people hear me coming.

I actually figure that when I develop the inevitable rear cylinder oil leak a little of the oil is bound to get splattered onto the rotors.  I am confident that this will cure my squeak and squeal.  It's not a bug it's a feature!

I noticed something like that on my old '76 FLH when I changed from solid rotors to drilled rotors.

The sound I get when I apply the brakes is like the sound you hear when there are locusts in the tree making their famous squeal noise.  The squeal stays until I released the brakes, front brake worse than the rear.

Now on my new '08 SERK I get the same noise only to a lesser degree.

I think it's the air being trapped in the rotor drilled holes that "pop" when they exit the trailing end of the pads.  Not too sure about that but that's the only thing I can think of.

In the past when I was a service manager at a Chevy/Pontiac dealership for about 10 years, we had some cars/trucks that would exhibit brake squeal with very light brake pressure and it would go away if you pressed harder on the pedal.  Some said they were glazed, but there really wasn't a fix for it other than changing out to a different material brake pad.

I know there's been threads here about different pad brands and material used.  I remember reading that they had a test bike, a Goldwing, and they had stock pads and then changed out to the "new" brand and the bike stopped considerably quicker.  They measured heat build up and there was less heat with the new pads as well.  I think this test was done at the new pad manufacturer's location and that it was reviewed in a magazine as well.

The bottom line is that some brakes will squeal and some don't.  Changing material of pad will probably help, but if you squeal with stock stuff I'm not sure how you would fix it without changing parts.  Then why don't all stock pads/brakes squeal?  I couldn't tell you, just don't know that answer.

But if the noise some of you are hearing sounds like a small locust in front wheel, I'd say it has to do with the drilled rotors.  Also on my old bike and the new '08, increased pressure doesn't make any difference on the noise.

Just my 2¢ worth of useless information.... :-\ :-\ :-\

I installed the Lyndall brake pads last weekend and what a difference. As expected, no more squeaking, which brings the pleasure of riding back to life for me.

These brake pads are the greatest. Both my CVO's now have the pads installed. And the results are the same for both: excellent braking and less dust without noise I suffered from the stock pads.

This is a great buy IMHO.

Lyndell, that was the name of the test I saw in the magazine.  I understand they are great pads, as you're endorsement so indicates.

How much were they?  Mike, you have an '08 SERK, right?

Thanks for the update.
