More CVO insurance ???
« on: February 22, 2008, 12:10:09 PM »

While shopping around for insurance for the bikes ( 07 FLHTCUSE & 07FLHX), boats, trailers, house etc., I have become curious about how others list their CVO milage and add ons. I have always listed our bikes with 3k miles a year and $1000 in add ons to keep the cost down. While shopping, I was a little more honest and listed them as 10k mikes a year with $3000 in extras. Reality is we do 13k a year and have $5000 in extras. @ 3k a year with $1000 in extras (and 1 HondaXR 400r), the cost is $1100 a year, at 10k mile a year and $3000 in extras, the cost is about $1900 year. My Question is; for those of you with high annual milage and many add ons, are you up front with your ins. co.? and are they checking the milage when a claim occurs? I am just worried that if filing a claim after 2 years and the bike has 26000 mi and the ins. co. says it should only have 6000mi can they deny the claim?

I claim 10K a year and $3000 in accessories and my insurance with GEICO is $ 560/year.  A lot depends on demographics and the average claim rate for the area.

It's likely due to our short riding season but I pay just about $400 a year from Progressive (HD).  I spoke with an agent earlier this year and asked them to scrutinize my coverages and make some recommendations.  What I ended up doing is bumping the underinsured and liability coverage to $100k.  I'll likely bump that to the max of $300k in the next month or so.  My Brother was in a bad accident in June last year.  The NY state minimum for liability is $25k.  The idiot cager that hit him had the minimum.  He hasn't taken a step on his badly broken leg since June of 07 and hasn't worked since then.  He's spent about 6 weeks in the hospital and the most he can get is $25k unless he sues the guy personally for his assetts.  The $300k coverage would fill that gap.

As with jgeorge, it probably is due to our short riding season, but I only pay about $500 a year for insurance thru Progressive.  I have the max. of 300K coverage for all areas.  Progressive only covers up to 1k of add ons.  But, I tested the insurance when I totaled my 2004 SEEG (deer).  The bike was only 3 months old.  I paid MSRP for the bike.  Their payoff check including the 1K for the add ons was 1K over MSRP.  Couldn't ask for more.  I had the check in less then 1 week.  They followed up regarding my health and injuries twice after the payoff.  Again, couldn't ask for more... :2vrolijk_21:

I pay about $350 per year with Farmers.  Annual milage does not effect the price.  I have $300K liability and $200 deductible on comp. & coll.  I am sure prices vary from state to state.

As someone from the business, what do you recommend for coverages, levels, and deductions?

Good ideas from both, I guess you all don't have to list your annual millage back there? J George, sorry to hear about your bro, hope he heals up ok. Sundabar, did you at least get to keep any venison? Hope you healed up well. Saw a wing that hit a deer, what a mess, had to air lift the poor guy out (rider, not deer).
I have Progressive for the bikes now. Their kinda funny though. Had 4 bikes, sold one, Ins. went up, was more with 3 bikes than with 4...Go figure.
Instead of having 3 or 4 Ins. Co's, I am looking to consolidating  all the toys house car, etc to one co. Problem is most Ins. Co's wont insure a 24 year old 60 foot house boat out here. And there is the umbrella pollice issues.
Still would like to find out how others list their millage etc.
Lrebel Thanks, I will have to check on Farmers

Boy, Canadians really must like bending over. I have never had a claim, am 20 years accident free and they're nailing me just under a grand. Lots of fun.

I have progressive on the bikes and Statefarm on the cars, Here in VA (commonwealth State) you can combine all your coverage, should you be injured , That's why it's best not to have all your eggs in one basket.

Example you are hit by unisured or someone with min amt your Medical bills alone could exceed 300K not counting the value of the bike. In a Commwealth state if you had only one policy the maxium you could get would be the total value of that policy Say it is 100K, Buy having your cars and bikes house on different policy's then you would be able to get The Total Ins. value of all the poilcy's together. Example Cars 200K +bikes 200K + Homeowners 500K for a total of 900K, Although you would only collect the 300K for your medical expence + the loss of the bike.

This only apply's to a Commonwealth State -- Check your local sate Insurance laws.

Progressive doesn't ask about millage and they offer co-rider  insurance which I carry, And I suggest you carry it as well, I know you don't ride two uo so why would you need it?  To keep from being sued when you pick up that nice old lady at bike week and she falls off drunk or you lay it down you would be glad to have it :)

as well as the old lady :)

As someone from the business, what do you recommend for coverages, levels, and deductions?

Doesn't cost much more to kick your liability up to $300K or even $500K....could be money well spent if you are involved in an accident and some slick attorney tries to come after all your assets.  And then for a few hundred more per year you can add an umbrella policy on top (most companies require minimum underlying liability limits of $300K).  Umbrella policies are sold in $1mil increments and you can usually go from $1mil to $2mil for just a few dollars more.

Good idea to have uninsured motorist coverage (and lawyers love it too!).  Some insurance companies offer u.m. on each vehicle, but then will allow you to stack limits, if needed.  If u.m. is stackable, some folks purchase an amount of u.m. lower than their liability limit on each vehicle, knowing that they can stack their u.m. limits.  **You really need to read and understand u.m. coverage in your state -- in most states, u.m. only covers bodily injury in the event an uninsured motorist causes injury to you or your passengers and they are at fault.

Medical coverage will pay for actual billed medical expenses regardless of who is at fault.  If you have great health insurance and don't have to worry about a big deductible or co-insurance portion, you might think about leaving medical off your policy.  One consideration regarding medical coverage:  If you have passengers that may not have health insurance, medical could be important for your passengers.

Deductibles are really personal preference.  I carry a $200 deductible, but only because that is the highest offered by Farmers.  IMO, you are better off to go with a higher deductible and save on your premiums.  The most important thing is that you can afford the deductible when you have to pay it.

If you have to add an endorsement to cover extras that did not come on your bike, you need to be honest about it if you want to get paid for what you have.  If you pay for an endorsement to cover $1k in extras and really have $4k in extras, guess how much you will get paid for your accessories??

Great info all! I almost understand it all. Can't seem to find out anywhere on the net if Ca. is a commonwealth state though. I guess every state differs as
Progressive in Ca. does ask for annual miles and will increase coverage for extras over $1000 for extra premium. I curently have a $500 decutable and no uninsured motorist coverage(thats going to change!),50/100 liability and a good driving record and still getting charged $1100 yr for the bikes! I need a better agent.
Any Ca. agents on this site?

I have used Foremost and pay about $400.00 a year and I have about $20,000 in accessories.  Yup, I listed the Trike conversion as an accessory and they said "OK".  I don't think mileage means a whole lot unless they suspect other underwriting issues.  Get as much liability as you can, and the un and under-insured stuff.

Ride Safe.

I have insurance through a local Michigan concern that allows for "Stated" Value and also covers classic cars. I have 3 HD's and a '68 Camaro RSSS - 2 of the HD's and the Camaro are insured for a "Stated" value and I pay extra for that. That said I pay $400 a year for each of the 3 HD's and the Camaro - though the Camaro is restricted by being licensed and plated as a Historical Vehicle with real 1968 plates (only allowed to use it for parades, car club events, hot rod night events and such ).

FYI - on those plates - they are my girls parents plates that were on their family car back in 1968, her dad saved them all and we got them approved by the state to use again on this car - they are now permanent to this car as long as we own it, no annual registration fees or tab stickers - pretty cool.

Things must be different here in Ca. Checking online quotes from Alstate, Farmers, State Farm, Formost, Progressive etc., all want an estimated annual mileage and add on values, To which the price increases dramatically as the mileage and add ons increase.
