Found this thread again just to gloat about the warm fuzzies from this past weekend's trip back and forth to York, PA. Guess I didn't realize as much while messing with it last year just how annoying it was having the bike run so badly while it was still all Zippered up. The unzipping and resurrection was completed awhile back of course. The bike had just seen some local running since though. Only 700-750 miles or so and no chance to just let it run for hours and hours to really get a feel for the beastie again.
York did that. Had one day about 750 outbound and another about the same inbound. Knew the bike was running well. But man this bike runs well know. Pulls and pulls and pulls some more. Out on the road it is a happy happy machine again. Which means I'm a happy happy rider again.
On the trip out had temps for awhile in to the mid 80s. On the way back had temps as low as 40 with drizzle. At different times had just about everything in between and ranges of clear continental blue skies to clouds sitting right down on the helmet. The bike never whimpered. The warmer temps would have castrated the bike last summer. Could crank it now in 6th at 75 and not a hint of detonation. And that was pulling the trailer.
It is wonderful to have this bike running so well once more. The bike deserved it. I did too. The heads and cylinders that came off are still here. I'd have a suggestion for the gentlepersons at Zippers as to what they might do with them. But I'm just certain a cylinder wouldn't fit there. And I'd hate to think of the difficulties if a keeper came off and they dropped a valve. So we'll stay focused on the here and now.
Here and now the bikes runs great. Great!
The only complaint isn't a complaint but a nuisance. Fuel economy isn't what I'd dreamed of if allowed to dream of such things. Pulling the trailer at 75 down the highway it's in the low 30s. So it's time to look for fuel at 125. It's time to find fuel before 150. Had some strong head winds for part of the trip so overall it wasn't a fair measure. But it's a drinker not a sipper.
Without the trailer in normal weather I've already seen close to 40 mpg with it once. That's fine. And stopping to rest your butt for 15 minutes every 125 miles or so isn't a bad thing I guess. Would just be nice to get to stretch it out and enjoy the ride just a little bit longer some times.
All told, however, the summary of the red bikes first good run after the rebuild would be:
