Don,
Being a huge Dave Mackie fan, your story is music to my ears. I know there's a bunch of other parts in there, but truth be told, it's heads, cylinders, cams and pistons that make it all go. Bubba_T's build is much the same. We'll know more about fuel economy and those things after he heads to Sedona and home to Mississippi, but the 600 or so miles we've done around San Diego county tell the tale pretty well. I would hope that others reading this thread give Mackie a shot and more importantly, talk to the man and listen to his advice vice cherry picking for what they want to hear and ignoring the rest. You and I have been preaching matched parts for several years. Your Cherry Bomb and Bubba_T's SERK are proof of what you get when you follow that path.

Don,
After having a chance to view your great machine, it is music to my ears to know that the engine is running great.
I hope that there are many miles with lots of smiles while you are riding. Ride On :2vrolijk_21:

Don - reading your bike report made me smile.  Damn fine bike & ride & can tell you are pleased with it, too!   :2vrolijk_21:

Know what you mean about needing to get out & do some serious miles to see what it REALLY feels like.   When they are running well all is right with the world & the rest of it is just sideline stuff.  When the weather is great, too, it makes a riding day even better.

Thanks Bob.  Thanks everyone.  The bike is still filthy from the trip.  But it's still happy too.

Runs well.  Sounds great.  Wraps quickly.  Pulls hard.  No smoking and not using a drop of oil.  Sweet...  ;D

Howie looks to be in the same boat with Cybil.  This spring is bringing both bikes back out of their doldrums.

Brian, you could not be more right.  The combination has to work in combination.  It's just a damn shame that a guy can try to do it right, do just exactly that, and still get hosed.  A bit more work.  A lot more homework.  And absolutely no reliance on anyone's assertions that didn't also bear up to modeling and homework and the red bike is where she's at now.  That would be fat, happy, filthy and smiling sitting in the garage just waiting to get out and do it all over again.

hehehehe, already got a PM about "what's in there?"

This had gone on long enough guess I just assumed it was a known quantity.  Never unwilling to talk about my bike though.  This will be everything there even if not done recently.  The recent corrections/additions will be (of course!) in red.  Here goes:

The Buttonfly Resurrection

Stock untouched bottom end
GP bearing support is installed
Primary chain tensioner is in there too
50 mm throttle body and intake
Feuling oil pump, lifters and cam plate
Dave Mackie 598 gear drive camsAxtell 3 15/16 cylinders for 107" along with Axtell pistons, static CR approx 10.25:1
HTCC CNC ported heads tweaked to mate with with the Axtell jugs and pistons
D&D Fatcat 2-1 exhaust

Guess that's it.  If I missed anything someone will point it out.

Well I hate to do it but Punkin is coming apart. I have some problems and I need to find it. I am going to change cams and heads and throttle body size. Don I am going to call you this weekend. I have a very good idea of the cams I want but still need to kick it around.

Thanks Don. I think I have a good idea where to take this. I am going to talk to Wes Brown by Friday. I already have a set of heads Diamond cut for this motor. Zippers thought different. It seems the common denominator with the problems with these motors has been in the head work they did. I may need them off the bike in the near future anyway!

BB the heads are already finished. They are very trick. I wanted to use them in the build but Zippers wanted to use their heads so they could develop a consistant map for the 113 package.

I now am going to get the chance to use them as I need to go into the motor. While I am at it I am going to change the cams and the throttle body. I am going to build the motor like Zippers told me they were going to do it back when!

Have you had the heads flow checked since you got them back from whomever did them ? Did you know what their flow rate is ? Do you know the combustion chamber size ? Also, have you had an EFI Throttle Body bored and ported to match the flow of your heads ? I'm talking a TB matched exactly to your heads not just this bigger unit or that bigger unit. One that is exactly the size to best support the flow characteristics of your heads ? Same thing with your cams  and pistons. That's why I preach Mackie. Mix and Match motors are hit or miss in my book. Me, I don't know so much that I'm willing to chance $5k or so on my meager knowledge, so I turn the whole business over to Dave Mackie and go with what he suggests across the board. The most recent build with Bubba_T's 03 SERK proved me right - - - or at least in my book. That's one strong 103 and it's already got 3,000 no hassle miles on it in just a month. It roars when you want it to and purrs when you want it to. Typical Mackie. FYI, Mackie played a big part in straigtening out the diaster Zippers made of Twolane' motor.

Just my $0.02.

I'm sure the heads were the major issue on mine Mike.  As we've discussed.  And not just the barbaric quality of the machine work in the valve job (or sad excuse thereof).  Bad geometry.  Bad flow.  Then try to bandaid that with a cam larger then it needed to be for the "package" I was sold.

Yours had seemed to be running ok.  Run in to issues with the onset of warmer weather?  Or something else creep in?  Hope it's not too major no matter what's going on.  Talk to ya soon.

I will call you and explain.

B B Wes Brown of Cycle Rama did the heads and the manifold. They were matched for a 54mm throttle body. Believe me this guy knows what he is doing. His nick name in the industry is Mr Horsepower. I do know what cam they were set up for but I want something a little milder. As far as flow and combustion chamber size, all of the info is in the box he sent the heads back in. The heads have been in the parts trailer for 1.5 years. So I promise they a good to go.
