Enclosed Trailers
« on: March 05, 2008, 08:36:19 PM »

Looking at a new trailer for our bikes. The model that I have pretty well settled on is 81" wide on the interior and 12  feet long, excluding the 2 ft tapered front area. I need to fit the Serk and the wife's Sporster in safely. Seems that the overall width of the Serk is about 41 inches, and if I put the Sportster in reversed that I will have enough room. Any thoughts, experience would be appreciated. :)

You have an Ebay account?
If yes, go there and type in motorcycle trailers.
There's some good prices there.
As for what to get I have a 7 X 14 which was suppose to be a 7 X 12 but the owner was to dumb to know the difference. A 7 X 12 works great. A "V" nose helps with access and gives better fuel economy. You don't need to back in the second bike just offset it 12 to 18". Mine is a Haulmark "V" nose. Get the cabinet for the helmets and a rod to hang the jackets.
Great prices on Ebay!

Good luck!

Good looking trailer, I'm thinking of having honda decal on sides as theft deterrent measure.  ;D  I'd be a little nervous with your paint scheme.  ;D Thanks for the info on the size requirements, now I'm going looking for all of  the " needed" accessories. ;)

I used "bike Pro" ride on wheel chocks.  The Pingel chocks don't cut it.  I also had to drill the lock holes a little to get hockey puck style locks on.  My 14 haulmark is plain white, no rivets, with polished lowers.  I have the "edge" package.  The floor is slick black and whiet check (looks good, perfroms bad), I needed to add non-skid stuf so the bike would not "walk" sideways.

I hear featherlites are the best, I did not look into them with haulmark so close to me.

Hubbard is a Featherlite dealer and will likely weigh in on this thread.  I like the V nose idea.  I'd also prefer a trailer I could stand erect in (6' 2" head room) and dual axle to track better and provide a little better security in the event of a blowout.  Although, only required when trailer capacity exceed a certain weight, electric brakes would be a nice safety feature.  That assist in a critical stop situation can GREATLY reduce the stopping distance and keep the trailer where you want it, behind you.

And it a dual torsion axles, smooth riding and he only way to go with electric brakes. Nice to have with and tow controller in the truck to get the brakes just right.  I prefere the low trailer cause it hides behind my fence.  I don;t like bashing my head but after 4 years you'd think I'd learn.

My trailer is the same size and has the tapered front.  You can stagger 2 bikes in the trailer and they will fit, you do not need to have one facing the other way.  It is tight, but I have a full bagger and a Honda.  I could fit two full baggers as long as it is set up right but it would be really tight.

Make sure you get good bike straps, the cheap Wal Mart ones will slip and occasionally release.  You get a sick feeling when you open the trailer and see your bike laying against the wall of the trailer.

Don't scrimp on tie downs...Mine have furry wraps for the bars and rachet types tie downs 3 inch vinyl coated hooks too.  I do not have the vee nose but it gave a place to bolt on a tack box for stuff.

I can almost bet if we ever rode in the trailer with the bikes, we would never trailer.   :)
But sometimes trailering is a necessity.

I have a 7 X 14 v-nose. Plenty of room as long as you stagger the bikes. I prefer tandom axle. Less tongue weight and not the drama if you have a flat tire. As Miker said....the key is the drive on chock so you don't have to use the side stand while tying down. And those soft ties that slide over the grips are pretty cool.

Can you still stagger the bikes in a 7x12 with a V nose?

You only need to offset enough to get behind the handlebars. Plenty of room in a 7 x 12 since the big bikes are about 8 ft.

You don't even need a V nose to get two bikes in a 7x12.  :cherry:
