I purchased the Vance and Hines Power Duals with the Monster Ovals w/ Black tips....... Best pipes I ever had on a bike, and the Black tips look really nice on the 09........Yeah I am new here just logged in hope this is a decent site.

Welcome aboard Dick! Lots to learn here. Good site.

Back on topic - I was speaking with my friend/mechanic today about the resonating issues discussed here. He was telling me that when people remove the catalytic converters on cars they get this problem sometimes.
So it it got me to wondering what the cat status was on those of you that are having an issue with these mufflers?

Do you have one that hasn't been messed with at all?

Do you have one that has been drilled like I do?

Do yo have the non cat header pipe installed?

I have these on a non-California 2008 SEUC with stock headpipes.  I don't think catalytic converters are an issue.  I suspect that the heat shields have a lot to do with amplifying the bass resonance as discussed earlier in this thread.  I suspect some sort of approach to damping them as one member has recorded would be effective.  Other than having the strong resonance right in the cruise range (2,500-2,800 RPM) I really like these mufflers.

I have the complete set up, all straight from Vance and Hines. I gotta tell you I am not aware of any Cat, I did the installation.
I used to have the V/H ovals too loud on long cruises, now if the constant hum at around 75-80 mile an hour is what we are talking about yeah I have that. But if I know I am going on a 3-4 hundred mile cruise I wear ear plugs just to get rid of the surrounding noise and it doesn't affect the radio at all.
If I am off track let me know. I am happy with this set-up and installed them at 400 miles, now just at 4,000 still happy.

I searched some other treads on this, and the only information I found was 3-5 above stock. Not sure how true it is, I would suggest calling V/H. for accurate info.

So, does anybody out there got these on with the Power Duals on a '09??  Can't find much info on that combination.

I'm really curious as to what kind of performance this combo brings..

Dickw

I just installed my monster ovals today, they sound great and the bike runs good too. I bought the Fuel Pak and SE Stage 1 kit, but do I really need to install them also? I see you have had yours installed for 4000 miles.

I have a new 09 Ultra Classic, it isn't a CVO, but does have the 110 engine. I had Monster Ovals put on when they did the engine upgrade. Went for a 400 mile trip yesterday and today with the wife. Something has got to change the wife says, and I agree. That low end rumble is just too much pounding in the ears and head for hours at a time. Anyone have an idea on how to quiet them down? Is there any kind of baffle you can install to do that? I emailed V&H with same question. Will see what they say.

Are the SE slip-ons quieter than the MO's?

Not sure your going to get anything quieter unless you go back to stock (My opinion), I would suggest getting some foam ear plugs and go another 400 miles. It gets rid of all the surrounding noise and you can still listen to the radio just as well as without.

Give it a shot and see how it works for you, this will only cost $1.00, and it is worth it.

If the wife and I are on the highway I put them in, if were just screwing around the mountains and back roads we don't.

Myself and others have posted on this site about this same problem with the MO's.  I took mine off and sold them after the trip to Milwaukee for the 105th last year.  I couldn't stand them on a long trip like that.  The low end droan drove me & my ears nuts.

I'm not sure if it's somewhere in this thread or elsewhere on this site but someone put some packing between the heat shield and the muffler and it supposedly helped.  Maybe someone else knows where that post was and can shed lome light on it.

Long answer=yes!

Check out some of your buddies and what they are running, get some feedback, and listen, maybe you'll find something you like!

I switched from Supertrapp SE's to Monster Ovals and think they have about the same overall noise level, but the MO's sound better.  The people I ride with say the same thing.  I always wear custom-fitted silicon earplugs since I'd like to still be able to hear when I'm sixty, and have not noticed any resonance.  In fact on the highway I hardly hear the exhaust at all.
