i changed to Spectra 6 speed tranny oil.  No whine , Goes to neutral everytime. I usually use 6th at 65 mph not worth it any lower just have to downshift to often . The oil change made  a big difference. Billy

I'm running stock oil in the tranny, no whine, or I'm just too deaf to hear it.

I try to keep the RPM between 2500 and 3500 which means I don't use 6th until at least 70mph.  Nothing scientific, it just feels right there.

To avoid ANY chance of lugging the motor, wait 'til the rev limiter kicks in!

I'm just wondering what speed, PRM you all shift into 6th gear and does your 5th gear have a whining sound to it?

If you think it's confusing now, just wait for Baker's new 7 speed gearset for the CruiseDrive trans.  I thought one of the reasons we buy these obsolete designs with more cubic inches than some cars was for simplicity, as in enough low rpm torque so we don't have to constantly dance on a shift lever.  If they add any more gears, I'm going to suggest they also add a digital gear position indicator to the instruments, like my 80's era Honda had, so we can keep track of just what the heck gear we are in.  What's next, a CVT?

You should avoid jugging the motor. Lugging the motor causes undo stress on the crank and other internal parts.  A twin cam Harley motor should be run no less than 2500- 2800 rpms.

I like the way some say to ride it till the rev-limiter hits......believe it or not.....there is less harm dont by hitting the rev-limiter than lugging the motor......Run an outboard motor at 6000 rpm's all day long and the thing will last forever, run it like an old bastard and rebuild it every couple of years....

I don't lug my engines and I can definitely tell by feel how the engine is working.  All my other bikes would be lugging at 2,000 rpm, but the 110s have so much low end torque that it just putts along at 2K- and it isn't lugging.  Obviously I downshift if I'm going up much of an incline.  -Just my 2 cents.

If you can hear it whine, the radio is not on! Learn to use the radio and shift into 6th right after 5th.
