Permanent live inside the fairing?
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:10:13 PM »

Anyone know, before I have to run another impossible-to-thread cable back to the battery, if there's a permanent live I can use (just doing the remote central locking install) inside the fairing somewhere??

When I was trying to do the "spots all the time" conversion, I was told that the blue wire for the fender tip light was always hot. You may want to check that thread but I know it is constantly hot.

Fender tip light isn't an unswitched source.  Dead when the ignition switch is off.

Yep, has to be or the fender tip would always be lit, as you say, Don.  I *think* I recall doing a connection for the HID headlamp that's always live. Need to check that out.

<later> No, memory playing me false (as ever! This getting old is no fun!) that one is not a permanent live. Must be one - at least to the ignition switch though, surely?

It it was the X-tralight (or whatever the product name was) brand HIDs that so many of us have done there would not be.  I think I do remember the Harley branded HID requiring something to be strung under the tank though.  Never put one of those in personally so it's only hearsay I'm trying to remember though.

Yes, it was the Harvey Donaldson, or whatever the guys name is (see, told you my memory is getting bad!) one Don.  The connection that goes back under the tank is to interrupt the feed to the inverter when the starter relay kicks in, sadly, not a permanent live.

I wouldn't put alot on it but there is an "always hot" lead going to the radio for memory.....don't recall the color off-hand but I have my GPS running on it.

Just been investigating, Fr8, and besides the live to the ignition switch, there's two on the Radio memory circuit, (Red with orange tracer) and also a permanent live to the speedo and the tach (brown with a grey tracer). The one to the tach is spectacularly well placed to use for this job, and is fused at 15A (though it's a right skinny wire). Given that the operation of the remote unlock/lock gizmo will be momentary, and in general, when the igintion is off, anyone see a problem with using that?

I thought of the radio and instrument unswitched leads.  Just hate the idea of messing with them when it's really so easy to quickly lift the tank and bring something forward.

Yes, that part is relatively easy, Don.  It's finding room - and I'm being very serious! - for even one more wire in the already overcrowded plastic channels, and getting them closed again.

Think outside the box (literally).  Cover the new wire with heat shrink for a little protection and wire tie it to the outside of the race track.  It doesn't have to be in there.  They never were before.

Isn't that the worst design ever? :puke: I dread having to take off the tank and pop the top off that trough. No wonder they went away from that on the '08s.

You said it Chuck!  :(  And mine is even worse with the extra cabling for the Bluetooth and the HID headlight.  Nightmare!
