Plug size
« on: April 06, 2008, 07:58:01 PM »

What size is the hex on spark plugs that comes in the 110?  The ones in my bike now are 11/16".  They were changed during the 15k service earlier this year.  Were the original plugs 5/8?

The reason I ask is I had a starting problem last week.  When I went to remove the plugs using the HD tool kit that came with the bike, I found that the plug socket in the kit is 5/8, the plugs in my bike are 11/16.

Did the dealer put a different plug in at 15K or is Harley putting the wrong size socket in our tool kits?

The standard plug for all Twin Cams is a 6R12, and the hex is 5/8".  Look at the plugs and see what name and number are printed on them.  The stock parts are labeled Harley Davidson and 6R12.

But some of the SE branded plugs are 11/16.  Some of them they buy in bulk supply as well.

A very fun byproduct to those is that at least some of the cylinder head bridges that Harely sells (the chrome ones, not sure about the others) won't pass an 11/16 socket through the hole.  So someone can add bridges after the plugs are in and then find they can no longer change spark plugs.  At least not without taking head bolt bridges back off.
