2008 110 ROAD KING
« on: April 14, 2008, 10:23:32 PM »

Have a deposit on 2008 screaming eagle road king (1000.00), Love the look of the bike. Have never had a harley,
but always wanted one. I have seen a lot of negitive responses to the 110 enginges, is it more the ultra's vice
the road king and so on. Would appriciate all responses. Bike is to arrive in june. Thanks TDW

My advice - - resist all urges to change a single mechanical item on the vehicle until you have at least 10,000 maintenance free miles on it. If it hasn't exhibited the problems some of the 110's have by then, you should be fine. My reason for offering this advice is that from the information available on his website, I've reached the conclusion that the dealers will use any excuse they can to get out of doing warranty work to these engines. The rate of failure as near as I can tell is about 30%. So the odds are in your favor. And if not - - - -- so long as you haven't done a thing to it, they'll have to fix it.

Just my $0.02

or budget another 6k to 8K for a decent motor.. Like an S&S or Jims.... or, pay an extra towing premium with your insurance company, cause your going to need it more then once

I'd hate your first Harley experience to be a 110.  Looking back I'd have passed on mine and I'm still waiting for the big problems.  So far all I have are serious "normal" knocks and noises that would scare off anyone I'd try and sell it to.

Get it and enjoy it, I've had mine for almost three weeks now and it is great, over 2K miles and the motor is starting to really sound great, broken in and all. I don't have the 5 gear whine some people talk about or any valve train noise that is out of the ordinary.

Yours will be built after HD has had some time to try new head gaskets and other stuff so your bike may actually come with the best (new and improved) head gasket HD is currently installing.

These bikes run great, ride smooth, and are just soooo much fun to ride, don't think about the possible head gasket leak. As Chief said in another post, you can still ride the bike even after the head gasket starts leaking, you just have to wash it a little more often. The leaking head gasket does not stop the motor from running.

Just keep telling yourself that - they fixed the problems that don't exist.  They fixed the problems that don't exist....

Actually, the leak doesn't always just go outside to make a mess.  The neighbor's just about didn't get him home when his went.  It's went in the cylinder too, fouled plug, smoke, unburned fuel.  New head gaskets don't fix moving liners.  Your money, you do what you want and maybe you won't have problems, but you can't say you went into it unaware like those of us with '07s.

TDW,

The issues specific to the 110 (head gasket leak, valve noise, automatic compression releases) affect all 110's, not just those in one model.  So to answer one of your questions, a Road King isn't less liable to have issues than an Ultra.  As for the crankshaft issues, those aren't specific to the 110 since the same crankshaft is used in the 96, 103, and 110.

You mentioned never owning a Harley before.  If you rode a BMW or Goldwing, you may want to get a test ride on the Harley before you make your final decision.  Even the CVO bikes have a significant performance deficit when compared to some of the other brands.  The reason I mention this is that I feel the advice given by Spiderman is right on the money.  If you buy the bike, leave the engine stock.  If you make any modifications to improve performance, you may be throwing your warranty away.  A few years ago that wouldn't have been a big deal, but with the failure rates of the current models it is something to consider.  Of course, if your wallet is fat and you don't mind throwing down another $5k-$10k over the purchase price to correct the deficiencies, then by all means go for it.

Very fairly stated Jerry. But if ya love the bike, like I do my SERK3, it's worth every nickel! ;)
