Beach Corrosion
« on: May 06, 2005, 03:38:07 PM »

Was talking with Spyder and He sujested I post this to the board.
I have just returned from the beach and have washed my bike about three time inside and out and sprayed it down with S100 corosion protection in every crack I can find. The one thing I have found is that there is always a lot of dirt ,salt, and other junk behind the fairing when I remove it. I spray down everything under there also with S100 to kill the corosion.

I think maybe you should've hit it with the S100 before going to the beach.  It's "corrosion protection," not "corrosion removal." [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Like I said , I was trying to stop corrosion not remove it . Once it starts its like fighting a loosing battle.

Brian,

You are correct...I live on the coast and have three bikes ALL of which are subjected to corrosion without proper care.  The key is to conduct the preventive maintence, if you can.  Otherwise do not purchase a bike with chrome, remain in the polished billet stage and wash when you can.

As for me, I like the chrome and attempt to place the effort.

Life's A Beach...And I hope to be enjoying it the weekend...High's in the 80's...

Dave,

Do not sweet it, it would appear that you have performed the proper care to prevent this issue....

Hi, Jock.  Funny this comes up now.  I was in my local shop Wednesday telling him about my pending move to South Florida and he recommeded the same S100 product as a preventative measure.  He lived in Boca Raton for a while and claims that the water down there is so full of sulfer that it will cause it's own chrome corrosion, even when used to rinse off salt spray.  I would guess the water in Savannah isn't as bad as South Florida (or is it North Cuba?).

Gee, if the water corrodes chrome, is it safe to drink? [smiley=nervous.gif]

Sorry, David.  I thought from your first post it sounded like you had some starting already.  The point I was trying to make is to hit it with the S100 before subjecting it to the salt spray next time so as to have the maximum protection against corrosion.  The S100 is excellent stuff.  Up here, a lot of guys without heated storage spray their rides down with that stuff before tucking them away for the winter to keep the condensation that collects on the bikes from the swings in temprature from doing any harm.

Funny thing is . The can says to remove polish before spraying on the bike. Guess they want it directly on the metal to stop and or prevent  corrosion.
Apply after each major washing.

Really, all BS aside I live in Houston,Texas which on the south east side you are close to the bay. Man salt water and the salt carried in the wind reak havoc on chrome here. It seems like no matter what you do chrome here has no chance of survival. I have had chrome on mirrors start to peal 6 months after I installed them on my bike. I purchased a set of Pro-One forward controls and within 1 1/2 years the chrome was trash. I did a ground up restoration, customazation on the bike and powder coated everyting that was aluminum or chrome black just because the powder coating was durable and would peal or rust. Chrome looks good when you keep it up but looks like hell when you dont!

Yes.  As long as you mix it with a little Scotch, it's perfectly safe. [smiley=laugh.gif]
