Another 110 in the series of leakers
« on: April 21, 2008, 08:57:11 AM »

Yep, my bike is in the shop.  Leaking oil from back jug. Noticed it Saturday - apparently just started since jug was wet on outside but hadn't blown all over the place yet. Cylinders are back ordered due to demand (big surprise there) & new latest version head gaskets on the way.

Not sure what I will do but currently considering cams, push rods, & high compression pistons.  Rebuilding it back to stock ( or whatever the latest "new improved" version of stock is) is under less consideration, since might as well take advantage of the time down to do some adds.

Still have the RK to ride - went for one to the coast yesterday with a group. Great day - 80's, blue sky, great food by the water with a great group of friends.

Coincidentally, a friend's 07 SERK went into the same shop here with the same problem on Friday.  Howie is right, looks like all of them (at least the 07's) will go eventually.  MoCo should do a recall - more than obvious they had cylinder issues with the 110 build & by now they sureashellknowit.

All in all, I've had better weekends, considering.

Sorry to hear it Mike. I showed my leaker to Gunn Runner yesterday at lunch. He said "Ewwwwwww" about the wetness.

Geez Mike sorry to hear that. Hope they get you in the wind quickly. Ya know had I found this site PRIOR to my purchase of my SERK I think I would've A) reconsidered given the problems or B) purchased two bikes knowing the probability of down time is very real. Oh well, what do we do now that we are hearing the 07B gasket is failing... :nixweiss:  :huepfenlol2:

Thanks Chuck.  Miserable club to join, misery loves company.

Latest stray thoughts include swapping out the oil leaker engine for a Jim's.

My BSR is spoiled to the the Jester - RK has been my solo ride for the last year.  She is most displeased.  Maybe I should sic her on the MoCo if this reoccurs?

The MOCO can only do a recall if they have a "FIX" for the problem-- So no Fix only replace with a different gasket that will fail again - So don't look for a recall - until all the owners test the next (latest Gasket)

Will be 2 weeks plus Howie - parts on backorder.  I had read enough to know there were potential problems by the time I bought the bike but figured they were isolated back then.  Frankly, I have been checking the bike after each ride anticipating a leak based on what I have been reading here.

Bike has a little over 17,000 miles now & I have 2 rides planned for May - Myrtle Beach rally & a trip to Alabama over Memorial Day that may be taken on the RK now instead of the jester.  Hope it's back in time, but not sure.

Yeah, that sucks.  Replacing the cylinders & the new gasket are currently recommended "fixes."

Sorry to read this Iski.  It does make you feel like it's just a matter of time for all of them.  It's only spring warmth and they're starting to fall like flies again.  Even the "new" gaskets.  It's scary to think what the summer heat is going to do to them.

Good luck man.  More good thoughts flying your way now too.

Thanks 2LR.  Miserable club to belong to: "110 Harley Oil Leakers Club."  Enough of us now for a patch/pin order even.   :(  :'( :(

I just want to ride the damn bike & have fun, dammit.  As the miles roll up on some of the lower mileage 110's, safe bet that most are going to be added to this "club".

Anyway, if it continues after the "fix"  I might just nickname the bike "James Bond" & carry a few extra quarts of oil so I can foil anybody following me with machine guns trying to steal my briefcase by throwing down a wicked oil slick.   :P

Note to self:  Need to look into buying fancy super secret looking briefcase.

Iski,
Sorry to hear you've "joined the club".  I thought that you and I would go unscathed, but it wasn't meant to be.  Like Don said, it looks like we all get bitten by the dread head gasket leak.  My dealer wasn't even listening to me when I started talking replacing the cylinders.  I guess with just the first replacement of the gaskets, it doesn't warrant replacing the cylinders.  There must be an obvious noticeable issue before they do that.  The MoCo has to realize by now that there's something drastically wrong with the cylinder/head makeup that is causing all of this...replacing different material gaskets is only prolonging the problem...maybe they're doing this until they do find the cause?   :nixweiss:  All I know is I went the route you did and am procuring a second ride.  It won't be as sweet as my CVO but at least I'll be in the wind while the "big one" is in the shop getting fixed again.  I know, after reading a post elsewhere about the the 7B gaskets, I can expect another leak.  :-\   Momma and I have two major trips planned in May and June (Tennessee and Outter Banks) and I need the CVO to be ready for those trips...The Street Glide is going to be on "one-up" ride.  I'm not planning on outfitting that for two, but perhaps I should consider it.  :nixweiss:  Good luck Iski...hope it gets fixed soon.

That's just what the MOCO is counting on more than whatever the problem is --IT"S a WIN-WIN for the MOCO :)

You got that right Wayne.  A very expensive, for me, fix to an issue that shouldn't be one with the MoCo.  If I wasn't so damned stubborn, loyal, or stupid, I'd have bought a metric for my second bike.  ::)  But I just can't bring myself to do that...YET!! :-X

Sorry for your misfortune of owning a 110' CVO. I have a 2007 SERK

I am in the same boat, my latest crate engine from the Motor Company is spewing oil from the rear head gasket area with only 5899 miles on it. Called the Dealer, the tech that works on my bike will be in Tuesday and I will have the bike back Tuesday late afternoon. This time I can't wait the 4 days for another crate motor, I need the bike for Laughlin River Run which starts this Wednesday 04/23/08. Talked with Bob Dwyer, he states, my crate motor has the new flywheel, new cylinders to eliminate sleeve movement, and 16801-07A Head Gasket which needs to be replaced with the 07B version. According to Bob Dwyer HD has addressed the flywheel problem, cylinder sleeve movement problem, and the Head Gasket problem with my bike. After viewing the cylinders, run out etc. the only problem was the 07A Head Gasket (laminated 4 layers of metal).

Can't help but laugh right now.  Just hung up the phone from a call with a guy back east.  Didn't even know he rode.  But I'd been out on the red bike early this morning and somehow it just came up.

He then said "I've got a new AMF bike."  No doubt a little stupidly I asked "new AMF :nixweiss: ?"  "Yeah," he said, "it's a new 110" motor from Harley and all these damn things do is leak and break."  So maybe the name of y'all's club is the Harley AMF Fan Club?

I too am very sorry to hear of another one, especially since I just picked mine up 2 weeks ago. Paranoia is a good thing as I check for "seepage " every time I dismount. One question, though it probably doesn't man anything-is there any way (like in the VIN) where it states when the bike/motor was assembled? Would it be too much to hope that since this has been going on for so long that the Moco started using the new and improved in later assemblies? I'm headed up to Americade in June and would hate to have to keep the miles down just for the false sense of "security" that it won't start til after we get back. Good news for the beancounters is that with the numbers I've seen posted, there's only 700+ more leakers to hit the streets. it's like deja vu all over again. Maybe their design engineers are SO GOOD that they intentionally screw up the design so that they can write off the loss of replacement parts. They probably have a warehouse of various leftover gaskets and such and now they're getting rid of them.
