Need advice on choosing a cam for my 110
« on: April 29, 2008, 09:05:08 PM »

Knock on wood I've got an 07 ultra classic with a 110" kit installed and it's got 17,000 trouble free miles on it. Anyway it's the standard CVO 110 kit from the paarts book. 9.3 compression 255 cams cvo style heads and so on.  This winter I added a race tuner, a 50mm throttle body, true duals and a high flow air cleaner.  It runs good. Dynoed at 90 horse and 110ft/lb torque.  The torque peaks at 3500. good touring machine. What I'm looking for is a cam that will retain this kind of torque, but pull hard up to 5200. I Know the 255 cams are EPA compliant and there lies the problem. Does anybody have any suggestions for an upgrade?  I would really like to stick with the lower compression to avoid any detonation issues.

I am running 595 grind cams from Wes Brown - Cycle Rama - Pinellas Park, Fla.  The combination is about 10:1, maybe just a bit less.  These are real strong torque cams, pulling from about 2k up.  Wes did the heads also - which is key - the package...  I'm running an HPI 62mm throttle body and D&D Fatcats.

I've heard some really good things about Cycle Rama, but as for now the budget is not going to allow the head work

You may want to check out the Yuill Brothers YB14SEC-07 cam. They are specifically designed for the CVO 110ci motors. With your bike having the upgraded 110ci (from 96ci) not sure if it would help or not. You might want to send a message to hd-dude who is more familiar w/the Yuill Brothers cams to find out if they'll work for you.

the yuill 14 would defintely pull to 5200 rpm...ideal compression for it would be around 10.0 and it might feel a little soft below 3000 rpm  with your 9.3 compression...those 255 cams are hard to beat at low rpm

On the cycle rama subject, has any one seen the 100 horse 100ft/lb torque 95" they have.  That is what I'm ideally looking for a torque curve that pulls from idle all the way through to 5500. It doesn't seem like this should be to hard to accomplish with 110". Also can anybody tell me about the CVO 110 cylinder heads. I haven't really found much info on them. Do they flow worth a @##* or not. How big are the valves. How much cam lift will the springs support?

if you have an '08 screamin' eagle catalog look at the acr performance heads...these are very similar to what's on cvo 110" bikes...when I had the heads off my '08 fxdse2 the valves measured 2.08 and 1.63...these heads are kinda new and not a lot of info on them yet...they're definiely an improvement over the 103 head because they have some squish... a couple of head porters have said that the exhaust port doesn't flow enough and some are welding the chamber to bathtub shape and welding the intake port to increase velocity(very expensive)

Yea, that's a great motor, TQ comes on just off idle, jumps up to around 100flb, and stays there. .But that's going to require more than just cams, head work, TB, etc...

That's is the plan for my RK, wanted to do it this last winter, but didn't get it done.

oilcan, the 255 should give you more tq, its the true duals that are killing your bottom end. also, with correct cam, you can run 12 to 1 compression without ping. if you want big tq and pull to 6000 rpm, consult a builder.
