DEALER MAINTAINENCE FOR WARRANTY ISSUED
« on: May 04, 2008, 07:06:29 PM »

Will be picking up 2008 110 Road King, End of June. Question if i get the 7 year extended warranty, Do i
have to bring bike to a dealer for general maint.? Someone told me for the first two years you have to take
bike to dealer for warranty. I would like to do oil changes if possible/ or bring to a authorized mech.
                                                                                    Thanks TDW

TDW,

Absolutely, beyond any shadow of a doubt, no matter what anyone at your dealership or local biker hangout tries to tell you, you do NOT have to get your maintenance done at a dealership!!!  They also cannot force you to use Harley branded parts and lubricants.  This is all spelled out in Federal law, and has been since 1975.  I would strongly question the motives and honesty of anyone telling you otherwise.

No, you don't.  If you do it yourself, keep the receipts for the oil, filter, etc., and record when you did the maintenance.  Then if you have to take it in for warranty work, you can show the documentation for the work that you, or someone else, did.

Well you already heard the answer, a resounding no, and as far as the receipts go, you do not have to prove maintenance.
It is incumbent on the manufacturer to prove you did not maintain the vehicle and that is just about impossible to do.

The "since 1975" remark refers to the Magnuson Moss act.

Maintenance schedule is in your owners manual.

Torque specs are in the service manual. But, many dealers have a small booklet that lists the torque values for all fasteners and all models (1 pamphlet).

Get the manual and you will be happy.

BTW, there is more then 1 manual.

Service - chassis manual
Electrical manual
Screamin Eagle supplements, depending on your model.

Duane,
I was wondering about that too, but the MoCo website isn't showing either of those for the SERK4. :confused5: I can understand maybe not having the Electrical Manual since it's not a FD w/all the associated electronics, but would have thought there would at least be a supplement. :nixweiss:

Maybe one of the SERK owners can verify this, wouldn't be the first time the website was wrong.

The electrical schematics are in the FLHRSE3 HD Service Manual Supplement for my bike. I assume the same for SERK4's. The P/N for mine is 99600-07. That, the Touring Model HD Service Manual, FLHRSE3 HD Parts Manual and the Owner's Manual are all you need.

I will order the manuals you posted fired00d. The dealer i got the bike from is over a hour away. Local dealers
were trying to make a huge profit on the bike. So had to buy out of the area. So i would like to do as much maint. as i can, not only for the savings, but i like to work on my own. I only hope the bike will treat me as good as i am
going to treat her, After reading the postings on the site about 110 isssue's, It give's some concern. But that's
why i will be getting the 7 year warranty. TDW

I would think an 08 would need an 08 schematic and manual.
The 08's are fly by wire and have other differences from a 07.
Craig (lil bear) took his to Bushtec to let them make a hitch since the fender is different from a 07.
