Sat Nav
« on: May 15, 2008, 08:56:20 AM »

Hi there everyone, just to let you know that i have been away on my 07 flhtcuse2 and after the first day i was ready to throw the sat nav in the bin!But then i decided to to read the instructions and spend some time on my own working a few things out,and do you know what it actually works very well so much so that i led our group around the Belgium Ardennes for three days on the most beutiful biking roads possible.so it goes to show that the built in sat nav is ok so long as you take time out to read instructions.

Here in the US mine does not know some fairly large roads in Pennsylvania (Off Road message on screen on Route 322).  However it had no problems taking me down a road that turned into a dirt fire road too rutted and narrow to allow me to turn around.  It did get me home, but not by any route I would have taken without a dirt bike.

The built in GPS works, but from now on I will be taking a street map with me just in case the road it wants me to take looks suspect.  Of course my car GPS has taken me off a highway to drive through city streets to take me back to the same highway I had just gotten off of.  To the GPS it probably looked shorter/quicker than staying on the highway.

Yes,i have a map as well,it is a good idea to see the towns on a map just to give the confidence that you are actually going the right way.

Tonight just for "chits and giggles" I put my NAV CD in the SEUC and programed my work destination into the unit to see where it would take me.  At first I wasn't impressed because I live in a neighborhood the is only about 3 years old, so it showed my streed as being "off-road" then finally about 2 miles up the raod it found where I was. From that point it was spot on all the way to work, it even advised me that I was entering a restricted area when I was comming on-base (something my Garmin Zumo didn't do). I agree with John who started this thread that if you want a basic NAV unit the factory HK will work for the most part (even better if you actually read the manual).

Ditto on the manual!  Initially I was disappointed but the more I use it the more I’m warming up to it.  I do miss the all the “data” off the Quest 2 like how fast, stop time vs. moving time, time to next, average speed, you know  - all that useless data but I still like to see it.  And I still like the visual of the map.  But the HK is actually not bad and pretty fast in recalculating routes.  I just wonder why in the world, for an onboard unit, why oh why didn’t they pre load ALL the maps so you don’t have to use the CD’s!  And it lacks loading of routes, I’ll probably still get a Zumo.

I have a Zumo 550 (pre-CVO days).  Yes, the GPS on my new CUSE3, is fairly lame compared to the Zumo.  Having to have the CD loaded also kinda sucks but oh well.  Having said that, I do like the stripped down version HD provides on the bike-its textual and I'm into that.  Since I travel for business, I pack the Zumo in my computer bag for use in my Rental car now.  The Zumo will never see the light of day mounted on my bike. I wont have a cup holder on it and I wont be towing a trailer either.  Okay, just had to get that out there tonight, my face hurts from the 500 mile ride this weekend so I'm kinda nasty right now :orange:  Note to self: Dont be an ass, put on sunblock next time.

When driving with the Zumo (in my Rental car), I could care less about a map display-just give me directions and mileage.   :coolblue:    I want to see the route and a few upcoming turns displayed in advance, nothing more, nothing less.    :soapbox:

If I go on an extended trip with my girlfriend, I'll throw the Zumo in the saddlebag for back up and/or she can power it up as a hand-held for a few moments to double check things back there if need be.  Probably, that Zumo will stay in the saddlebag un-used for the trip and the HD one will get the glory - it's simple and it works.

My HK Nav system is certainly functional enough to keep me from spending $500-$700 to replace it.  I like the simplicity of it and the fact that the screen switches to dual view so I see the turns and can still play around with the XM.

Mark my experience is similar. It is what it is. Reading the manual was a big help and it beats a paper map.

I've got an 06, when I enter the Nav function HK says "Navigation not install, bring your wallet to the stealer"

Am I missing something, or did my bike not come with it in 06?

Nope, not on '06.  You can, however, add it to your HK.  $$$$

I already have spent a pile on an interactive navigation system... cost me thousands over the years.. she sits on the back of the bike and constantly tells me where to go.

Come to think of it, it's not just on the bike!

I agree with the positive statements. For me, it obviously came with the bike, I gave it a shot, and in summary I like it very much. No items to carry around, no adapters. It's just there. It works fairly well in Europe, although the data seems to be outdated. The part no. is -06. If this works like for other GPS data, the data may be from 2004/2005. Not fair to deliver those with a 2008 bike. With outdated data, obviously the guidance is sometimes off. Would I add it as a $$ option? No. TomTom Rider 2 and Garmin Zumo are about half the price, offer maps, 3d, touch screen, and much more. H-D could greatly improve on the system, and in result many people would buy it with an E-Glide for convenience. At the current state, it works like an in car system from 2004 or earlier.
Question: Has anyone found out, how to download any multi-stop tours? This is a function for both the TomTom Rider 2 and Garmin Zumo, and I miss that very much.

Ride safely,
Louis

You can't download anything to the HD GPS.  That is one of my beef's.  Also, like I whined about earlier, with an on board mounted system you would think they would pre load the maps so you don't have to use the CD's...But like others have said it does work good as a basic GPS.  The part by itself is $999.95.  If an "option" would have passed.  The unit may be 06 but the CD's I got seem to be pretty current with recent streets in my area.
