Nephew in hospital in Birmingham
« on: May 19, 2008, 08:03:52 PM »

My nephew was involved in a single m/c accident last Tuesday on his way home from work.  He "crushed" two vertebrae in his lower back, had surgery on Friday and the prognosis is excellent.  Docs do not expect any paralysis!  Unfortunately, Saturday AM, he had an embolism.  Nurses caught it, pumped him full of thinners and got him on a ventilator and things seemed to clear up.  Touch and go for a bit, however.  Last update indicated a few days in ICU until he's off the ventilator and the docs are sure there's no further danger of any more clots floating around, then off to rehab for a few days to exercise the legs and the plumbing.  I'm waiting for an update from my brother as I write this.
I wouldn't normally post this, but thought you folks would find his job of interest.  HE'S A TEST RIDER FOR THE MOTOR COMPANY DOWN IN TALLEDEGA, AL!!  He'd just finished a night run of about 70 laps (must not have been on a 110"  ;)) on a "new" bike they're testing.  He said he headed home, was tired, got a little complacent and went into a curve too hot.  He was less than a half mile from home :(.  He went to the outside of the curve thinking the grass was a better choice than laying the bike down (almost new 2007 Police Electra Glide), but didn't realize there was a culvert lurking in the dark.  He came off the bike, but it followed him.  He landed and the bike landed on him.  All things considered - he was very fortunate.  The busted back and a bruised knee.  Hopefully he'll make a full recovery.  I'd appreciate you folks keeping him in your thoughts and prayers.  He's a good kid (with a GREAT job! :)).

Thanks, Gary.  We're all confident he's going to be fine and be back in the saddle.
Sure wish I could find some time for us to get together and ride.  This wedding planning for my daughter has consumed just about every free minute.  But some day, we'll get together and put on some miles.

I haven't missed one in about 10 years - but that's the weekend of my daughter's wedding.  Wedding is on Friday (the 13th!!), big barbeque on Saturday, so if I'm still standing, we may try to get down to Waugh's - if so, I'll give you a call and we'll try to get together!

Doesn't sound like she's superstitious. ;D Speaking of "different" dates to get married my wedding was on "Good Friday" 1988 which just happened to be April 1st. I keep telling my wife that I had my fingers crossed so the wedding didn't count. She's not buying that though. :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

If you get down definitely give me a call. :2vrolijk_21:

FlynDyna, BIGDOG and our good friend Jorge - thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers for Mike.  I spoke with my brother late yesterday and they've reduced the oxygen to 60% (a very good thing).  So far no additional clot issues.  They were hoping to take him off the ventilator today or tomorrow, couple more days in the ICU, then to a step down room for a few days.  When we think about how bad it could have been, we're very thankful he's doing as well as he is.
Again - thanks for you thoughts and prayers.
Jorge - please give Martha our best,
Tony

Tony,
Sorry to hear about what happened to your nephew.  Debbie and my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.  I hope everything works out okay and he's back up and "running" in no time.  Hopefully, after things settle down for you and Phyl, we can get together and do a little riding.  Be safe.

TC, Sorry to hear of your nephew's accident and I hope his recovery is quick and complete.  Things sure can happen fast sometimes...

(If his recovery is going well, and you happen to visit him while he is in a medicated state, ask him what he was riding around Talladega!!   :ons_5: :ons_1: :lipsrsealed2: )
