State law in MA is special election to fill an open Senate seat 145-160 days after a vacancy is created.  I wouldn't expect him to resign though.  His seat is in hand until 2012.  Plenty of precedent for an even mostly incapacitated Senator to hold his seat for a long time.  The Senate itself won't push for him to go anywhere while he's still breathing.  Hell, Byrd hasn't even been doing that for awhile now and he's still there.

You and me both DAWG, I don't wish anyone ill to the point of death, but Ive got no use for the whole lot of em. Broke my heart when John John died but that's because of the way he acted when his daddy died. (How could you not love that little boy saluting his father's caisson ) But the Kennedy family came about their wealth and power through bootleg liquor, stock market manipiluation and a whole raft of illegal activity by Joe Kennedy. No love lost by me where the rest of em are concerned.

Isn't his son Pat already a Congressman?  Wasn't he the one that ran his car into a barrier in Washington last year while under the influence of sleeping pills that are known to cause sleep walking (at least that was the story).

Yes, US Representative from Rhode Island.  The accident was reportedly caused by Ambien.  He went in to rehab for RX drug addiction right after.  A few of the clan have run and failed to gain office but those I can think of right now that are in or close office are just Patrick, Kathleen Townsend who was a recent Lt. Gov. of Maryland, Mark Shriver in the Maryland state legislature and Maria Shriver as California's First Lady.  Proabably missing some.  But those are the ones that come to mind.
