I wonder which of our illustrious politicians are using the LEOs' for their own gain here. I ride with a few cops and they all think this is BS.  :sauer005:

The article states "increase" in accidents. How many were there in previous years compared to now?
The only language to speak is money. Move the event out of their jurisdiction. >:(

Lots of cops don't understand the culture, and think that 75% of Harley owners are OMG.

Could just be enforcement through ingnorance!

Were they only stopping MCs or all vehicles to check for license/registration/etc??  I thought traffic stops had been proven to be legal.  They do it all the time in NC and call it a seatbelt compliance safety check.  A lot of DUI/Drugs/no operators license arrests as a result. But, they stop all vehicles, not just a certain type.   :-\ spyder

Here in SC a vehicle can be stopped at a Safety Check i.e. "Road Block" so long as it is consistent. That is every third vehicle or every other or every one for that matter. One can just not discriminate. So pulling just motorcycles wouldn't pass.

That happened in 05 when I was there. No big deal. I was running a 2 into 1 propipe with drilled baffles. Never bothered me. Just checked for proper registration, helmet etc. Heading down again & I'm in no hurry when down there. They can stop me all they want.

When there are over 12 million illegals floating all around, why do they have to pick on people on motorsickles?  I feel it's unconstitutional for all the roadblocks that are set up.  DUI checks, safety belt checks, and God knows what else.

That's why I belong to DDAMM -(drunk drivers against mad mothers).  :bananarock:

In NY it is legal to "selectively enforce" any portion of the VTL on a given selective enforcement detail (SLE). There are parameters to the stops and as you said, there must be a pattern. Unfortunately some departments have interpreted this to mean that if they want to enforce helmet laws, they may indeed stop strictly vehicles requiring helmets. To my knowledge it has not been legally challenged yet. The whole selective enforcement detail i.e. safety check roadblock concept seems to exist in a constitutionally "gray" area...
In defense of the current interpretation of this practice there is at times a need for police departments to operate in this gray area. Without it, many fleeing criminals would not be apprehended. This can be argued both ways for ever, but in the post 9/11 era, selective enforcement is probably gonna stick around for at least a little while longer.

Here in SC, as you well know, it is legal to ride without protective head gear and therefore makes the point moot while you are riding in said aforementioned state. However I totally agree, once again Randy, that there is a need for selective enforcement under well established guidelines.
