Scooter Sales Way Up
« on: June 02, 2008, 09:34:05 PM »

There was a segment on the local news tonight about scooter sales going through the roof here. The interviews were with both a Yamaha and a Honda dealer, both said they have sold every one they can get their hands on. Looked like most of the customers in the segment were getting 250cc sizes and one had a sign out saying "At Least 65 MPG".
They tied that segment with another at a local Ford dealership, there the guy tried his best to sound upbeat but he looked like he was going to cry any minute. He did admit the used Diesel F250 and 350's had dropped 15K in the last 90 days and even at that price they were not moving.

Gee, and the media is leading us to believe that the economy is in bad shape  ;D

Mark

As I said in another thread we took the scooters to the beach this past weekend.
We rode them from 6pm to 10:30 pm Friday evening.
We rode them ALL day Saturday till we filled them up at 7pm that evening.
With Nancy and I on one scooter and her sister and her sister's husband on the other scooter they were carrying a load. When we filled up it took 1.65 gallons of gas total for both. A day and a half of riding and we burned 1.65 gallons. We were loving that!

I just wanted to add,
We have had the scooters for two years now and riding them is the most fun we ever had going slow.
You would be surprised at how much more you see at 30 to 35 mph than WFO.
They are a blast!

I'm told that 49 cc scooters are federally mandated from the manufacturer to not run faster than 30 mph.
And you know me, I like a challenge so with a little work they will run 40 to 45.

Mine are the nicest of the cheapo scooters so they will run 45 but with the 10" wheels they get a little wobbly doing that. Kinda like riding the Frontier at 130. So 40 is about all you want to run and feel safe.

Now the Aprilia SR50 R Factory's will run 50 to 55 with a few mods and handle well doing that.
They are awesome machines with 12" wheels, upside down forks, liquid cooled and fuel injected.

Trying to get two for the garage this week.

I was in Salt Lake year before last and they were having a big national convention for scooters, there were hundreds of them all over the place. They had a concourse, with custom and old restored scooters, and a rodeo. It was funny there was a bunch of tattooed, pierced, leather wearing scooter freaks running all over town jumping off curbs and raising hell. I meet people from all over the country that came for the convention.

In 1969 I bought a 1961 Sears (made by Vespa) scooter for $80, it was red, white and blue with stars and stripes. Ahhhh, memory lane. Anyway, it would cost me less than $1.00 a week in gas.

Just think what that one would be worth now, especially if you kept it stock? ;)

It was a POS when I got it, smoked like hell and had pieces of wire hangars and duct tape holding it together. I traded it to a friend of a friend for a early 60's scratched up tan Fender Mustang. Now that I wish I still had.

One of those Aprilia's would take you to work for about a gallon a day.
And in style!
