Miles to empty - how does it know?
« on: June 02, 2008, 09:51:14 PM »

I guess everyone starts off with roughly 205 miles to empty on their first fill up on the  Duracell.  My question is, as your fuel economy gets better do the miles to empty also increase exponentially?  Yeah, I know here's a quarter!  Or does is it always continue to read 205?

My 05 Screamin Eagle V-Rod had this feature and I used to leave it on that function as I was riding around. I got a laugh out of how it would change when I dropped the hammer in 3rd gear. IMHO, there is a fuel use function in a chip connected to the speedo which calibrates miles left based on current MPG as compared to the amount of gas in the tank. Obviously with a float style gas guage, it can't be too accurate. I could be wrong, but I don't think H-D has started putting electronic TLI's in their gas tanks yet.

Yes, it changes.  Mine has gone from 210 at the low end after a fill up to 239 at the high end.  After starting out as it recalculates I've seen it go as high as 259.  I've also seen it say I had 50 left and 10 miles later it read "LO" and I got 5.8 gallons in it... It's a guide not a ruler!  I always go by the low fuel light which I've checked and it's at a gallon left when the light comes on.  I fill it within 20 miles of the light coming on and that way I never run out.

Ride Safe,

I don't trust any gas gauge, I fill at 150 miles and am always safe. ;)

OK here is a question, how do you know if you have this feature?
It's a guy thing I really don't want to read the manual, yet.

I think it's in all the '08 touring models.  I have the feature on my SG.  The way you can tell if you have it is to press the odometer button and look in the LCD display until you see a presentation that says "r XXX  (xxx being a number between 1 and 999)".  Mine appears to be pretty accurate, when my display when to "lo" and I filled up shortly after it went to that, I put in just under 5.5 gals.

I haven't met a CVO owner yet that could keep their hand off the wick so fill it up at 1/2 a tank and enjoy :orange: :mango: :pineapple: :2vrolijk_21:

I have a Kuryakyn combo fill/batt thing, and I have quickly learned that when it goes yellow - I go to the gas station...

I am getting under 40mpg - has to be the around town, with me on the throttle pretty heavy?
