1000 mile service cost?
« on: May 24, 2005, 10:04:48 PM »

I am curious what you spent on the 1k service?  I have seen some references to free at certain dealers.  Just curious as I have the service manual and can see this will take a few hours to complete.  Thanks in advance for the info. JP [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Pappy, my 1,000 mile service was "free" (to the extent it wasn't hidden in the setup charge or somewhere else), but it is bascially the same as the 5,000 service which typically runs about $300 or so at my shop.

Ouch!.....That's the reason I set up my shop with a lift and everything needed to be self sufficient.  Just can't seem to get past a $300 oil change and not knowing that everything was done to my compulsive specs.  Besides, after a day of dealing with clients, I'd pay someone to let me service their bike! Had mine done cost $325. Got it home and pulled the oil cooler to stop the oil that was spilled all over the cooler from dripping on my garage floor. At 5000mi I serviced it myself and pumped about half a tube of grease into the steering neck. Seems that step took too much time for them. I think a lot of these places are nailing the owner for a $300 oil change and not much else.

Mobe, I totally agree.  No way that most shops are doing 'everything' that's supposed to be 'checked', lubed, adjusted, etc, etc. on the 5,000 mi. services.  Esp. on a touring bike w/ the fairings and all .........no way!    [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]   spyder

I totally agree! I would never pay some one to change my fluids. My shop too is set up with everything i need to work on the bikes. I take great pleasure in wrenching on my bikes. I always have. Working on Harleys is one of the most pleasurable things I do. In fact in all the years of owning Harleys the only time one of my bikes has been in the shop is for warranty items!

My dealer actually does a thorough service(I work there and have watched them work on customers bikes) I did pay for the 1k service as it is a critical one. I like working on them myself and will be doing most of them myself.

I got raped on mine.  Wouldn't have been quite so bad but when I took it in I complained of the bike diving badly in the nose under even moderate breaking.  Suggested it needed the heavier SE fork oil because of the problem.

Saying it was diving as badly as it was should have (I thought) made it a warranty issue.  When I went to pick it up the service order wasn't written up that way.  I asked about it but they weren't too interested and I didn't have time that day to make it a real discussion.  Total bill was like $350.00.  Just nuts.

That was the last elective or non-warranty service they'll do.  Fortunately with the lift at home now just about everything can be done here.

After just getting my bike fixed after my wreck, I prefer to have the dealer do my maintenance for now.  I usually do my fluid changes and have the dealer do the major services.  Since I now know the tech (on a first name basis) who basically rebuilt my bike, I have him do the work.

I feel rather fortunate,Had my 1K done today at the dealer where I got the bike, total cost for everything was $173.00. My tour pack was damaged in shipping from the factory, small paint discolorization, they installed the new tour pack as well as my luggage rack at no charge to me,of course I wouldn't have expected to be charged for that. This dealership is also a MSRP dealer. [smiley=biggthumpup.gif]

My 1000 miles service was $00.00

When I went to pick it up the bill was $353.00.
I went to the owner of the place and asked him what was up with that.
He reminded me that since I got the bike for less than MSRP they would normally charge for the 1000 mile service.
I reminded him that the less than MSRP, no shipping and no set up cost was part of a
bigger picture.

My 1000 mile service went to $00.00

And we are all happy!

In my world what goes around comes around! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
