Helmet Locks
« on: May 24, 2005, 10:50:08 PM »

Probably not a hot topic with most folks, but does anyone have a good method for stowing two helmets on a SEEG?  The Tour-Pak is too small, and there isn't much exposed tubing to connect a regular helmet lock.  Momma and I would prefer to leave the helmets with the bike rather than lug them with us.

Do you mean stow as in just hang them or actually lock them up somehow?  If it's locking them up you've got moderately limited options.  Half helmets (some of them anyway) will go in the chopped tour pak.  But not if you got much else in it.  A buddy and I spent a six pack one evening looking for ideal places to mount a helmet lock on his Glide and never did find a satisfactory location.

The King Tour Pak is fine for two helmets, but it makes for an expensive helmet lock.  And you still have to be concerened about how much other crap you're carrying.  With the chopped pak or no pak at all I just decide not to worry about it.  Have quick releases on all the helmets and just snap the quick release around a backrest.

Cable locks work well.  Stow it in the tour-pak 'til you need it.

Brian he's got the chopped tour pack and I'm guessing a full face helmet.

I ride with the Nolan N100 (flip face) and I've always just left it on my seat or sitting on my mirror.  Never been a problem..........maybe nobody wants to put their head in a helmet that my head's been in. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Sorry, that wasn't clear.  I meant stow the cable lock in the chopped pak until you need it.

BTW, WTF is a full face tour-pak? [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I just use a combination padlock with a long shackle. No problem locking two helmets, no extra key.

I have the organizer in the saddlebag and the lock fits perfectly there for storage.
Plus it doubles as a rotor lock.

103, is that when your head is stowed in the tour pak and your butt is hanging out behind?  (at least then folks will know where to put the flowers)

FWIW though my beanie is like JC's on this one.  I almost never stow it.  And never ever did before getting the king tour pak for this bike.  Always just hung it someplace on the bike.  In fact the day the tour pak got stolen awhile back the helmet was strapped to the backrest  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

well, yeah.  That's a good reason.  But, I was thinking about if you were to drink to many big-boy beverages and had a tendency to fall down, wouldn't having a helmet be a good idea?    [smiley=drink.gif]    [smiley=beerchug.gif]   [smiley=1syellow1.gif]  Har!  spyder

The above is the HD helmet lock. Agreed, there aren't many places to attach it. I've added crash bars on the rear and attached the lock to the one on the right. I'll send a pic of the install later. Used to use my cable lock but that was a pain.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The wife and I wear full-face helmets, so the Tour-Pak is out of the question.  I thought about the H-D locks, but the only place I can find to mount them is the front crash bars.  Also, H-D doesn't give the dealer the option to buy them keyed alike.  I've considered fabricating  a bracket with non-locking hooks to mount under the rear of the Tour-Pak - I'll have to kick that around a bit.

never locked up a helmet since the mid 60"s - never lost a helmet from theft - someone has to be really stupid to steal a bikers helmet - (sorry for the kill mode) once in a while we will just carry them - but not often

There are helmet lock that fit both the front crash bars and the rear saddle bag gaurd if you have installed them and they make multi helmet extenders(basicly a T extender).

Prior to my 05 SEEG, I had an 03 Ultra Classic with fairing mirrors installed.  With the mirrors removed from the handlebars, I installed a Kuryakyn Mirror Stud Helmet Holder #4207.  It cost $13.95 and comes with a lock.  The mirror stud is threaded so you will have to "tap" the existing mirror hole so the part can be screwed on.  It works really well and is a good alternative, if you have fairing mirrors.  Here's the site in case you're interested:  http://kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=harley&ci=2292
