High Anxiety Idle
« on: June 09, 2008, 07:26:54 PM »

Hi Everyone,

Got something to share about electronic throttle
 (this is not a sticky throttle issue, which was fixed).

SYMPTOM:
high idle rpm, won't come down;

DETERMINED:
must have 'goosed' throttle before shut down, which set idle memory at high rpm;

SOLUTION:
turn ignition knob to start 4 times (do not start), which rests idle memory;
do not 'goose it' before shut down;

Maybe this has already been posted.

Just trying to share the fun,

Timba

I think I saw this posted once before, but thanks for posting it again.  You may save a lot of folks who missed it the first time an unnecessary trip to the dealer.

I've developed the habit over the years of letting my bike idle for at least 30 seconds before shutting it down, just to make sure the oil pump has scavenged as much oil out of the crankcase as possible.  Now there is another good reason to do so with the electronic throttle.

This is very useful. Of course, I had the 2k rpm idle and did not immediately know what to do. Thank you very much!

Ride safely,

I also ran into this at about 400 miles on my new SERK.  The local dealer shop manager explained that it was a feature called "parade mode" which is suppossed to help cool the bike down during long low RPM.  He instructed me on how to "reset the idle mode"... twist the throttel full off and the with run swith on, turn the ignition on and then off 4 times.  It did cure the high idle, but I can't find anything about "parade mode" in the hand book or the service manual.  Needless to say, there is now a hand written note in my handbook.

I actually think that if you just let the bike idle for about 5 minutes the ecm figures it out on its own. The trick is not to touch the throttle.  :-\  Let the bike warm up first.

Tom, I think your shop manager has confused an actual feature (parade mode) with something that is abnormal (ETC home position).  Parade mode is designed to help keep the engine from melting down when allowed to idle for extended periods of time.  It does that by slowing the idle, not speeding it up, richening the mixture, altering the ignition timing, and actually shutting down the rear cylinder once the engine temp reaches a certain point.  The exact sequence of events was published on the site previously, and it varies depending on model year.  The latest version just shuts off the fuel to the rear cylinder.  Look for EITMS (engine idle temperature management system), which is the official name.

Not for sure, but I believe this to be a "Throttle By Wire (TBW) issue. :nixweiss:

Had the same thing happen to me last monthj and started looking on this Forum for answers.  Voila!  Found the subject addressed in an earlier post, and followed the information provided.  Worked like a charm.  Thanks to all for the informational posts.

I just realized yesterday that the idle was at 2000 rpms.  Now I know the solution.  Thanks!  I thought it was just me.  I also thought it might have always been that way, but that I had not noticed.
