SERT Install / Program
« on: June 15, 2008, 02:29:07 PM »

Trying to install a SERT (not a Super SERT) in my '05 SEEG.  Hooked it up (via USB/Serial adapter) and it read the correct VIN and ECM numbers after choosing read ECM.  When I started to program the selected file, it got as far as 25% - installing Bootreader and then quit.  It read "Bootloader install failed".  Tried several times and it would not go past this step.  When I went to exit it gave me the Install incomplete statement and told me to take it to the dealer as my ECM my be corrupted.

HELP!!!!!

I would suspect the USB adapter.  Some of them do not work properly with the SERT.  The one I have had the best luck with is Belkin usb adapter f5u109.  They can be had on eBay for cheap.

Another alternative is a PCMCIA serial card if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot.

I know that this may be the obvious dumb question, but are you running Windows XP and not Vista?  :nixweiss: The SERT software will not work properly with Vista.  The Super SERT does, but not the older SERT.

Running XP.  If it was the USB/Serial adapter would it still read the ECM and do a partial install?

I don't know.  But to rule it out I would start by using one I know works and go from there.  Until you know that isn't it, you could be chasing your tail.

They can be bought for less than $11.00 on ebay, including shipping.  http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=f5u109&category0=

Yes, I had the same issue on an XP machine and a Vista machine. I also tried the belkin adapter and it did what you described above. I tried an adapter made by Keyspan that works great, on Vista and XP.

What a bunch of crap that the install is so "adapter cable specific".  By the time I run around and get a cable (the second one I will try) I would probably be better off and pay the dealer $70 to install it - which is what HD wants anyway.

Now that I feel better, I found a Belkin f5u409 cable (which Belkin says is the same, just the newer version) nearby.  I will be trying that one tomorrow - hope it works.  I actually got a newer disc (the "L") version which I tried and after the recognition part, it failed at 20% saying it could not read the ECM.  The PC installation on my RK was MUCH easier.

Tried the Belkin cable with the same results - goes to 20% and then quits saying that it can not read the ECM.  This is after it reads the ECM for VIN and ECM number.  I guess my only choice now is to pay the dealer for the install.  1 hour labor for a five minute install.......................

The SERT was not developed for a USB interface. The cables that adapt from USB to serial are were the problem lies. The serial information comes at a fixed rate and if the converter cable does not support the speed at which the data is transferring, the program (sert) can do nothing about it. Some manufactures have chosen to support different data rates in there converter and the ones that skip the rate needed for programming are what causes the problem.

Anyone have a PCMCIA to Serial adapter they are using and recommend?

Tried the USB to serial that I have and it will not pick up the ECM - tried an XP laptop and VISTA one for S&G's...short of hauling out a desktop and monitor to the garage I need the adapter and would rather go the PCMCIA route then the USB.

There are a ton on eBay, but in the interest of not trashing my ECM would rather go with one that some of you have used and find successful.
